In a move announced today, ESPN President George Bodenheimer has been promoted to Executive Chairman of the network. In his place, John Skipper who has been Executive Vice President of Content since 2006 will assume Bodenheimer’s duties as head of day-to-day operations and become ESPN President. The changes become effective on January 1.
Under Bodenheimer’s leadership, ESPN has expanded its commitment to the NFL with Monday Night Football, expanded its soccer coverage with English Premier League games and the World Cup, obtained the rights to all of tennis’ Grand Slam tournaments, brought ESPN into the 3-D realm, also made ESPN into a global entity. He has been with the company for 31 years.
Skipper came to ESPN in June 1997 from the Disney Publishing Group to help start up ESPN The Magazine and has steadily moved up the ranks. He’s been instrumental in expanding ESPN’s content and was a key figure in bringing in major sports properties to the network.
