George W. Nelson, 74, of 2923 Lincoln Hill SW died Tuesday (Nov. 15, 2011) in Sunset Home surrounded by family.

George was born May 9, 1937, in Teaneck, N.J., a son of Dr. Alfred W. and Kathryn O'Driscoll Nelson. On Dec. 29, 1959, George married Judith Ann "Judy" Paradise in Blessed Sacrament Church in Hannibal, Mo. She survives.

George graduated from Tenafly High School (Tenafly, N.J.) where he was an accomplished three sport athlete. He was inducted into the Tenafly High School Hall of Fame in 1991. He attended and played football for Rutgers University and Kirksville State Teachers College (Truman State). After graduation, George returned to Tenafly where he taught and coached until 1964. George then moved to Quincy where he taught history and coached numerous sports in Quincy Public Schools until retiring in 2000.

George practiced his Catholic faith as a member of the Church of St. Peter. He was a member of the first group of lay Eucharistic Ministers in Quincy. He brought the Eucharist to the home bound and hospitalized parishioners. He sang with St. Peter Chorale and other music groups in the church. George was an active member of TEC, Cursillo and Marriage Encounter renewal movements. He served as president of the St. Peter Grade School Association and leader of the St. Peter's Cub Scouts.

George was also active in many community organizations, including as chairman of Quincy Preservation Commission, as president of Quincy Preserves, and as a member of the Landmarks Commission of the State of Illinois, Quincy Noon Kiwanis and Golden K, Quincy Community Theater, the Boy Scouts, American Red Cross, Quinsippi Soccer League and the CYO. George volunteered at Blessing Hospital and delivered Meals on Wheels in his retirement.

George was born into a "show business" family. His father and grandparents were vaudeville actors and his Uncle Ozzie and Aunt Harriet Nelson had a long career in the music and television industry. He enjoyed the summer he served traveling as bodyguard for his cousin, Ricky Nelson, and visits with the family in California through the years. George carried on the tradition by participating in local theater and school productions.

George was interviewed by Philip Bashe for Bashe's biography on Rick, and Bashe quoted him a number of times. George traveled with Rick as one of Rick's bodyguards during Rick's summer tour in 1958.
