"Godfather" director Francis Ford Coppola says "Part II" -- which many consider the greatest sequel of all time -- was a MISTAKE ... insisting, "There shoulda only been one."

Coppola was leaving Hemingway's Lounge in L.A. last night when we asked if he would ever pick up the Corleone storyline for another GF flick when he dropped the bombshell.

We agree about GF3 -- but TWO? Two was AWESOME -- with Al Pacino, De Niro ... the trip back to Italy -- C'MON!!!!

I beg to differ... I loved the Godfather part II. Heck, I think it was better than the first one.

"The Godfather II" is the best sequel ever! I might watch the film sometime.

So if I got this right, you didn't see The Godfather Part II but say that it's the best sequel ever?

Coppola must be on crack! GFII is that rare sequel that is just as good as the original. If anything, it's more a companion piece than a sequel, with flashback bits (young Vito) from the book and a continuation of Michael's story from the first one.

Well written, well acted and supremely well done all-around.

And for the record, I do like GF III. However, it's a good film, while the first two are great.

I saw it...but I can't remember watching it much.

Ok, thanks for clarifying.

No problem...

I have to see some films more than once to know about the movie.

Godfather 3 was atrocious, as for part II, it really is equal to part I. I won't go as far as saying it was superior, but definitely on par.

It was a great sequel but like it's predecessor, it "insists" upon itself ;)
