This week was a classic case of what's been wrong with Simon Cowell's baby. The Rock Week theme wasn't taken seriously, as Amy Reiter notes, the judges kept on sniping at each other, the contestants were predictable and repetitive and the show is stuck on an "unrelentingly unvarying pace." Plus, she adds, Steve Jones is dragging down "X Factor's" energy and sense of fun. "It's not just his accent that's a distraction," she explains, "but also his stiff manner and the way he abruptly and frequently interrupts the judges to keep the show on track timewise –- like some kind of smarmy schoolmarm."
