....Or were you disappointed it wasn't a comedy like its predecessor? What did you like about the spin-off? What did you hate about it?

I love Lou Grant from the few episodes I've seen, it's in my top 20. Sadly the DVDs of it have been discontinued. :(

I thought it was a limp spin-off (especially since it came from such a stellar show.) I thought the show tried to do too much, and as a result, sort of tripped over itself.

It wasn't shown in my part of Scotland orginally but when channel 4 was launched in 82 it was shown, then on the UK Family Channel in the 90s.
I really liked it,as well as the drama, you got the comedy in the verbal sparring of Lou and Mrs Pynchon, she always called him Mr Grant too!
There was also sparring between Billie and Rossi and Animal was in a world of its own.
It hasn't been released on DVD,a few videos were,I have 4 eps on video, great show, good stories.

I wouldn't say I love it, but I do like it. I have only scene a few episodes, but I am definitely planning to watch more of it.

i watched it when it originally aired, i really liked it - Ed Asner did a lot more with the character there and it was chock full of cheesy 70's goodness.
most people that were expecting to see just a comedy were disappointed, but it did pretty well otherwise.

Julie Kavner was in an episode of "Lou Grant" as a battered wife, not as
Brenda,I should say.
Eileen Heckart did a guest spot on "Lou Grant" as Aunt Flo,the only other
MTM character, other than Lou to appear on the show.
