"Hell on Wheels" Premieres Big for AMC

AMC's new Western drama, "Hell on Wheels", didn't exactly impress the critics, but it did premiere well for the network, as AMC's second biggest premiere ever with 4.4 million viewers.
So it looks like "The Walking Dead" still remains the debut ratings champ.
Although Westerns tend to appeal to an older audience, the Sunday night drama also did well in the ad-friendly 18 to 49 adult demo with 2.4 million viewers.
Pretty good for a post-Civil War era drama about the construction of railroads, right?
However, "Hell on Wheels" did get a pretty big lead-in from AMC's ratings champ, "The Walking Dead", which had 6.3 million viewers and 4.3 million in the 18 to 49 demo, meaning that "Hell on Wheels" lost about 30 percent of its lead-in.
But it's still a sold retention rate for the freshman drama.
