Donnie Darko first came to theaters (in limited release) back on October 26, 2001.
The film takes place in 1988 and it's about an awkward teenager who gets doomsday visions from a bunny rabbit.
Opening a few weeks after 9/11 wasn't good for this film as most of the movie-going audience were pre-occupied or just not in the mood for this bleak thriller.
Upon original release Donnie Darko earned just $515,000 of its $4.5 million budget.
The movie's cult following began when Donnie Darko played at New York City's Pioneer Theater as a midnight movie and kept it running for 28 months. More cities followed suit and Donnie Darko developed an audience.
When it first came to DVD it earned $10 Million and the strong sales prompted the director (Richard Kelly) to release a Director's Cut of the film in 2004.
In recent years, Donnie Darko made it to Blu-ray and inspired a direct-to-dvd sequel, S. Darko, in 2009.
Many of the loyal fans prefer the original release over the Director's Cut and don't like the sequel.
Happy 10 Donnie!!!
