View Full Version : Comedies making a comeback while Dramas are slowly fading?
TVFactFan 10-23-2011, 06:20 PM TV Guide raised a question this week is dramas now becoming absent on network TV due to the recent boom of sitcoms this season. It was stated that the 10pm slot that is used for dramas is now losing viewers due to cable and DVR and now networks are trying to figure out how to make dramas hot again. The ratings have dropped for all the dramas below
Grey's Anatomy
House
CSI
Law and Order:SUV
So is this a sign that this will be the decade for the sitcom BOOM?-lol
I can't remember a TV season where I liked so many new comedies at one time in the past 10 years. As of right now I like
How i met Your Mother
2 Broke Girls
Mike and molly
The Office
Whitney
This is defintely something new for current TV
Mr. Television 10-23-2011, 07:35 PM I think sitcoms are coming back. Currently I like
2 Broke Girls
Mike & Molly
Last Man Standing
New Girl
Raising Hope
The Middle
Suburgatory (SP)
Modern Family
The Big Bang Theory
Pus
Hot in Cleveland and Are We There Yet on cable.
benjamoon 10-23-2011, 07:47 PM This is absolutely the year of the sitcom so far - no drama is a breakout hit but New Girl, Suburgatory, and 2 Broke Girls are doing awesome, Last Man Standing has had a promising start, and even Up All Night is holding up well by NBC standards.
Add to that that three veteran sitcoms (Modern Family, Two and a Half Men, Big Bang Theory) got over a 5 in the demo this week (none of them did during this week last year).
How I Met Your Mother, Mike & Molly, The Middle, and Raising Hope are doing better this year as well and The Office is still NBC's top scripted demo performer. Really the only problems are Parks & Rec, Community, Whitney, Happy Endings, and Man Up and none of those are completely tanking by their respective network's standards.
Sitcoms are the hot property right now.

No offense, but I think Whitney is the worst sitcom on broadcast TV right now... so stale and tired.
Now Parks & Rec on the other hand is HILARIOUS even though the ratings suck.

Whitney is the dud of the new sitcom batch. Free Agents is the only one that was worse and I think How To Be A Gentleman, while bad, was pulled a little too quickly. But the sitcom has done very well this fall. Modern Family and Two and a Half Men are the top two scripted series (beating any drama), and Big Bang is right behind them. New sitcoms New Girl, 2 Broke Girls, and Suburgatory are red-hot. Tim Allen's Last Man Standing has done the best for any new 8pm comedy in over 7 years. Man Up! just started but premiered OK.
Only one new drama has impressed, and that is Revenge. Great show!

Too many kids for me on Last Man Standing

3 teens and a grandchild is too many? Less kids than The Cosby Show and you love that. Come on that is no excuse.

Please tell me that you are not compaing this new show to a all time classic like the Cosby Show?
TimOhara123 10-24-2011, 09:31 AM They may be giving dramas a rest but all things come back, in a few years dramas will most likely be back in full force

I agree with you. LAST MAN STANDING is tired and old. The jokes used in the show would've been made in 1986, and the premise is pathetic for a show airing in the year 2011. It annoys me that it's doing well. The Cosby Show, while not my favorite, is undoubtedly a classic.
They may be giving dramas a rest but all things come back, in a few years dramas will most likely be back in full forceI don't think dramas are going to suffer that badly. Maybe not as many, but they aren't going anywhere. There are a lot of good ones on networks and cable.

I think it's hard for me to watch a show with a father and a house full of girls.

I think it's hard for me to watch a show with Tim Allen. Why is America allowing him to continue to think that he's funny?! Haha!

I agree, as long as you take Home Improvement out of the equation.

Me, too, Solomon. Why Tim Allen signed up for this I don't understand. He will always be Tim "The Toolman" Taylor to me.
UMFaninMD 10-25-2011, 06:40 PM It seems most of the sitcoms are progressing while the dramas are regressing or doing the same old stuff. 2 Broke Girls is extremely timely for what's going on right now with the economy and people can relate to that. Modern Family is a traditional family comedy that features some non-traditional characters. Mike and Molly shows that you don't have to be thin to have an on-screen romantic relationship. This is stuff that I think a lot of viewers like because they can identify with some of the characters.
Most of the dramas, OTOH, are the same old "pretty people with problems" or police procedurals competing with each other to see who can come up with the wackiest criminal each week.
And ITA that Tim Allen is not that funny!
comedyfreak 10-28-2011, 10:19 AM I think Harry's Law fell in the ratings, though I blame the network for moving the show to a new night and changing the premise.
