Any other horror movie fans here think that horror movies have simply gotten worse?

IMO, I think that they are lacking just about everything that makes a good horror movie. All they seem to do now is rely on gore, special effects and pop up quick screams. Most of them have very little, if any plot to them and confuse disgusting with scary. A lot of the horror movies out to seem to be remakes of the classics. Even if they don't claim to be a remake, the story lines are visibly picked up from past horror movies.

With that said, I do admit, that gore is not something that I am against, I enjoy it in a horror movie, but I just don't want it to be meaningless. Like Saw, that movie isn't scary, just gross. Texas Chainsaw Massacre on the other hand, it adds to the movie, of course, that was a movie that had already set up a scary situation, made the characters believable and wanted to show how demented leatherface really was.

There's still good horror films being made...you just have to go outside of the Hollywood mainstream to find them....granted you still have to dig through all the junk to get to it. Outside the States for the most part foreign countries are making good films, and within the States the Independents are coming up with some decent stuff. My eyes are always on guys like JT Petty(when he's not working on video games), Larry Fessenden and his company Glass Eye Pix, Ti West, Jim Mickle, Ryan Nicholson, Stevan Mena, Christopher Smith...

My main complaint is CGI....I don't mind CGI when it's used alongside practical effects, and sometimes CGI does work when it's done well(like Trollhunter) but for the most part it seems to be the go-to for many horror films...I've seen a few films that go the route of CGI for blood and gore and it just looks cartoony.

The 90's still remains the worst decade for horror I think, though it still had it's fair share of good.

I agree with the foreign and independent horror films. The Japanese horror films have always appealed to me. They seem to usually get into the more morbid and derranged stuff. I have also found Italian horror to be good to. They seem to work more with the look and design of the setting to create the feel of the movie. They also seem to have no boundries.

And Jim Mickle.... he did Mulberry Street back a few years ago right?

Yes, Jim Mickle did Mulberry Street, and more recently Stake Land.

From the 90's I also liked Ringu, Candyman, and Dust Devil, and Mute Witness...as a whole it just seems to be a weak decade.

France and Australia have both also been turning out some excellent stuff in the last few years....and I'm liking whats been coming out of Norway too- Cold Prey 1 & 2, Dead Snow, and Trollhunter.

Not just Japan, but also Korea, Thailand, China, all have been turning out some really good horror.


Though even Asia got onto the Scream-train with Haebyeoneuro gada(Bloody Beach) which definitely was influenced by all of the Screams, I Know What You Did Last Summers, Urband Legends of the 90's.
