So, I was driving my 40 minute commute home from work tonight, and I stopped and bought a betta fish. He's a pretty little red thing. The rest of the way home, I am brainstorming for name ideas, and I thnk, "Gee, I could name him after some obscure UM character..."

And so here are the names I came up with as possibilities:

1. Pollis- because he likes to live in a clean bowl.
2. Bonnie- because he's kinda chunky and I have a tendency to overfeed fish
3. Omar- so I can hold pinches of food over the bowl and say, "Look at it Omar, look at it!"

And this is where my mind goes in the car. ;)

I'd name him Jule.

He looks normal, but without warning he could tear apart a salad bar and don't even dare ask him for a ride to the underwater subway station...

For a tie-in to the missing UM fishermen theme, I'd go with either Casie Nicole or Sarah Joe. Though if you choose Sarah Joe, your fish may mysterious vanish and wind up buried in a makeshift grave on an island somewhere.

I like Ogopogo, Caddy or Champ for a UM fish name, especially if the fish is camera shy.

Well someone I know suggested alpha, which I think is so amazingly clever. But man, I am still torn. I need just the right name for this guy...

Well, since all the good thoughts are taken, I can only come up with one so far. Because fish have their eyes on either side of their head, it seems like they can only look at you with one eye at a time, not both at the same time....hence, I would name the fish Lisa Penz! (or Penzi or Penza).

But I can't help but ask........How the in the heck can you tell the sex of a fish? Are you sure it's 'he' and not a 'she'? If you're not sure, maybe you should try to come up with a unisex name like Ummer - ya know, after all the UM-er's on the board who took interest in your "fish story".

BTW has anyone told you that you have WAY too much time on your hands but on the other hand, a 40 minute commute to work would probably quailfy you for that.

Hi Shek! It's actually really easy with betta fish. The males are the ones with the long silky tails. The females have short, stubby fins and tails.

My daughter had a couple bettas(at different times) when she was younger. She named the first one Thirsty Water, and she named the second one Colorful Fish. I still like the name of her first one. :lol:
