View Full Version : Yay Or Nay? 'One Day At A Time' Is Not A Classic Show.... Brian Damage 10-12-2011, 10:53 PM ....just a hit show from the 1970's? Retro4Life 10-12-2011, 11:13 PM Uhm, I'd say it's a classic. The characters are quite memorable, it has a quality of timelessness in the situation of a woman trying to raise two kids on her own (something that is going to happen, pretty much forever at this point), and it's got the trademark Norman Lear mix of laughs and seriousness. Yep, I'll give it "classic" status. Brian Damage 10-15-2011, 07:04 PM Uhm, I'd say it's a classic. I know for us old schoolers it is a classic, but how can a new generation say the same if it is not readily available to them???? TVFactFan 10-16-2011, 12:25 PM Interesting take Sol, what makes you say that? 1. syndication failure 2. Poor DVD Sales Brian Damage 10-16-2011, 12:54 PM 1. syndication failure 2. Poor DVD Sales I wouldn't exactly say syndication failure, because One Day At A Time was syndicated for years back in the 80's. Kasey 10-18-2011, 05:44 PM Classic--because people still remember the names of most of the characters, they know the theme song by heart and they know certain episodes. Just because it sold poorly on DVD is no indication--so did the Beverly Hillbillies. Also, the current young generation is not an accurate gauge. I work with a couple 20-somethings who've never seen an episode of I Dream of Jeannie or The Brady Bunch or All in the Family. I am certainly not Only gauging it on the younger generation, but it is important none the less. When all of the older generation are dead and buried, what keeps a show like ODAAT in people's consciousness? Guy Incognito 02-07-2012, 04:23 PM To me, the difference between ODAAT and, say, The Jeffersons is similar to the difference between Our Miss Brooks and Leave It To Beaver. Both were extremely popular during their time, but one show achieved immortality and the other has gradually faded from public view. Sometimes this discrepancy is caused by lack of perceived quality or because the premise is dated or old-fashioned, but more often than not it's just the luck of the draw. So my vote is for "Hit 70s Show" and nothing more. In fact, if not for Mac's problems I doubt the show would be remembered much at all today. Mr. Television 02-07-2012, 07:18 PM I don't know why ODAAT hasn't done well in syndication. I remember CBS aired it during the daytime for a few years. I used to watch it when I came home from school. It was syndicated well into the 1980's and then it just disappeared. It's funny how certain shows do that. I remember Benson and Alice both ran in syndication on more than one of my locals through most of the 1980's and now they're nowhere to be found either. TVFactFan 02-07-2012, 07:28 PM I don't know why ODAAT hasn't done well in syndication. Maybe a slot on Antenna TV will gain new fans. Another lost sitcom from the 70's Mr. Television 02-07-2012, 07:34 PM We have yet to see if it will do well in syndication. The last time I saw it was on Comcast On-Demand a few years ago and they didn't even show all of the episodes/ TVFactFan 02-07-2012, 07:42 PM I think that will be a good place for it. So I see why it failed. They can move Good Times away but I will be 46 years old before they get rid of that show. Antenna TV programming philosophy "If the show is doing well we will stick with it for 25 years" LOL Tweety 02-07-2012, 08:06 PM If some of the crappy 70s shows are considered to be classics, then so is ODAAT. It's interesting that some old-show network hasn't picked this one up, especially since Valerie Bertinelli is back on TV. ODAAT went on for too long, but a lot of shows have done that. There's a great old-time-TV network down here in Florida called "ME-TV" (ME stands for Memorable Entertainment). They air the MTM show, the Dick Van Dyke Show, The Bob Newhart Show, Hogan's Heroes, The Odd Couple, The Twilight Zone, Perry Mason and some other good ones every night. In the morning they run Gomer Pyle, Family Affair, Petticoat Junction, My Three Sons and others... It's a fantastic network BUT... they recently ran "Bosom Buddies", which has got to be the most idiotic show ever conceived (let alone aired). And why do stations still show that crap? Because Tom Hanks was in it. I don't know if they still run it, I think they still might on weekends. Valerie might not be as big a star as Hanks, but a station like that should be able to pick up a show like ODAAT and put it on. And the worst episode of ODAAT has got to be infinitely better than anything Bosom Buddies ever did. TVFactFan 02-07-2012, 08:30 PM hallmark seems like it would be a good fit for ODAAT |
