If you’re like us, there isn’t a speck of dust on your trusty ol’ VCR, because it still gets just as much attention as the Blu-ray player sitting beside it. This “dead format” still has countless gems to offer that have yet to show their ugly faces on DVD; however, depending on demand and availability, these tapes can burn a humongous hole in your wallet. The putrid yet evocative cover art on the likes of Wizard Video’s big boxes is often the culprit, and it’s about time someone (i.e. Charles Band) did something about it.
Prior to his current Full Moon Pictures, Band created Empire Pictures in the early ’80s, producing and distributing some of the funkiest horror films the decade had to offer; he also entered the VHS market with Wizard, which released Empire titles in addition to numerous other flicks he acquired the rights to. Wizard also issued Band compilation movies like THE BEST OF SEX AND VIOLENCE, ZOMBIETHON and FILMGORE, which presented bloody highlights from pictures in Band’s catalog minus all the intrusive plot and dialogue; these tapes became especially sought after by collecors. But this month marks the DVD debut of numerous features previously available solely on VHS, minus the hefty price tag.
Under the new Full Moon’s Grindhouse Collection banner, 10 titles are being issued on Friday, Oct. 21, including the aforementioned clip collections, David DeCoteau’s debut feature DREAMANIAC and the East Coast indie productions MUTANT HUNT and NECROPOLIS. (What, no ROBOT HOLOCAUST??) Most of these will include a Band intro and “Grindhouse Featurette”
