Tracy Morgan Explains Homophobic Comments to Letterman
Oct 11, 2011
by Douglas J. Rowe
That homophobic rant that got "30 Rock's" Tracy Morgan in trouble months ago hasn't gone away. David Letterman asked him about it on Monday's "Late Show".
"At the end of the day, I'm a comedian. I try to use the gift God gave me to help the world, to heal the world, not to hurt anyone," Morgan said Monday night about the June 3 show in Nashville. "I was hurt by it because people came to the show and were bummed out."
Morgan characterized the whole thing as a "misunderstanding" and tried to explain that his kind of comedy may be more roundabout than some people are accustomed to.
"Comedy Central is premise, set-up, punch line. But I came up under the old regime ... Sometimes I have to get to it."
Letterman wondered: "Did you not say what they were upset about?"
"I can't remember. That was maybe 50 shows ago," Morgan replied. "Whatever it was, I do comedy in the spirit of Richard Pryor, Lenny Bruce, George Carlin, and all the people like yourself that came before me."
