View Full Version : What Unsolved Mysteries genres freak you out the most?
1990 UM fan 10-10-2011, 11:48 AM The murder cases or the ghost stories? For me, I'm a little unnerved by some of the ghost stories, like the Lizzie Borden one and the one about the Queen Mary. The re-enactment of the Lizzie Borden episode is hard to watch at night, especially hearing the old nursery rhyme that goes with it and the part where the lady sees Lizzie's ghost in the basement. Hearing the audio recordings of the sounds from Queen Mary are eerie too (not something I'd like to stumble upon anytime soon). The circumstances behind the ATV murders and other episodes like the Jasper Watkins and prostitute killings episodes make it hard for me to sleep sometimes, the whole stories just send shivers down your spine.
TheCars1986 10-10-2011, 12:22 PM While I was freaked out by a lot of the ghost segments, the "Unexplained Death" ones always scared me the most. Not in a frightened sense, but more unnerving, especially if there was a possibility that the person was murdered. Some of the "Missing Persons" cases made me feel the same way.
luismann 10-10-2011, 04:00 PM the murders really scared the crap out of me when i was a kid. sometimes certain cases kinda creep me out only at night though.
justins5256 10-10-2011, 04:17 PM When I was younger, I found the unexplained death and missing person genres the most unnerving. I will say though that the first time I saw the Fish Springs Nevada haunted house story I was very young and so terrified I couldn't sleep at all and stayed awake the whole night watching movies like Batman '89.
soilentgreen 10-10-2011, 05:59 PM Undoubtedly the unexplained murders/disappearances, such as the New Hampshire serial killer, Dexter Stefonek, Blind River Rest Stop, etc. Victims of circumstance cases.
UMFaninMD 10-10-2011, 07:16 PM Definitely the missing persons, murders, unexplained deaths and the random assaults, like the Christmas hit and run, "Debbie," "L'enfant" and "Carol." Some of the UFO and ghost segments were also pretty creepy.
TheCars1986 10-11-2011, 09:22 AM The Omar Arsonist case was quite unnerving as well.
Fukiyama 10-11-2011, 11:23 AM Ghost stories have never bothered me.
It's always been murders, unexplained deaths, and missing persons.
People who are just... gone. Dropped off the face of the earth. And not because they went hiking in some remote forest, but because some form of foul play was involved.
born2late 10-11-2011, 03:19 PM Ghost, aliens and weird creatures. They are freaky, but I love those.
jojo_D 10-11-2011, 04:27 PM Missing people. Especially the Collen Reed, Debra Poe, and Angela Hammond segments. They gave me nightmares.
The ghost segments were just funny to me, never did creep me out at all or bother me.

Yes, exactly. I get chills watching those.
mystery_daisy 10-11-2011, 07:51 PM Missing persons, unexplained deaths, unsolved murders, I love to research and investigate most any kind of unsolved mysteries except usually i'd rather put my energy into the above than say ghosts, ufos and chupacobra type stuff.
mystery_daisy 10-11-2011, 07:53 PM ...although i do find natural unexplained phenomena interesting - like the Gurdon Light.
Princess Lola 10-12-2011, 07:25 PM Unexplained death cases especially where there are stalking elements to them or freaky clues.
MegtheEgg86 10-17-2011, 06:57 AM It's a tie between "Unexplained Death" and "Missing Person". Some of the "Wanted" segments were pretty bad too!
dynoguy88 10-17-2011, 09:58 AM When I was younger, I found the unexplained death and missing person genres the most unnerving. I will say though that the first time I saw the Fish Springs Nevada haunted house story I was very young and so terrified I couldn't sleep at all and stayed awake the whole night watching movies like Batman '89.
I know I've probably mentioned this before but I felt the same way about the Fish Springs House segment. I was 10 when that episode first aired and I remember it was the last segment of the evening which followed the Joe Smith case (also terrifying). I could not sleep the rest of the night. The next day, my mom told me that for my own sanity, it would be best for me to stop watching Unsolved Mysteries for a while. I agreed with her. Then the next Wednesday as my parents were getting ready to watch the show, I went upstairs and turned it on anyway. :D
The haunted segments always did me in but not as much as the murder segments. Especially the murders that took place at night. The Gretchen Burford segment was the second time I had a sleepless night as a kid. I'm 31 now and it's amazing how segments like those are STILL chilling to me.
asmitty 10-17-2011, 02:52 PM The Omar Arsonist case was quite unnerving as well.
I think this one freaked my out the most when I was young. In my teens, I would perpetually stay up late to watch the late night Lifetime reruns of UM. A large number of their cases freaked me out. UM knew how to set a mood back in those days. The cases that really imprinted themselves in my memory were "Unexplained Deaths." The idea of someone turning up dead with no witnesses, suspects, or ideas what happened to them were very eerie for me. There were many "Missing Persons" cases that also conveyed this same sense of fear through their circumstances. While I did get the shivers from many of the ghost stories, they just did not carry the same impact as the crime segments.

I think these types of segments are so chilling because they were committed by someone who did not know the victim, and they happened out in public. Segments like the Gretchen Burford one always made you think that something like that could happen to anyone at anytime.
Smokescreen 11-13-2011, 10:45 PM The UM genre that freaks me out the most has got to be the Homicide cases - why anyone would take another person's life is absolutely deplorable and sickening
You can have your episodes about ghosts, haunted houses and whatnot - but we all know who the real monsters are and unfortunately, yes, they do exist :(
