Don't you hate being caught off-guard with no time to come up with a good lie or excuse? That's what happened to me. I was in my driveway working on my truck when some neighbors came up from behind and asked if I wanted to attend a neighborhood gathering at a banquet hall.Everyone was to bring some food and get to meet one another. The only food I knew how to make was chili,so I decided to bring that. I made it the night before the occasion and put it in the icebox. I got up the next day and heated it up on the stove,then I poured it all into this 3 gallon plastic bucket that came with a lid. My niece gave me that bucket filled with cookies she made a couple of years ago,I don't have any large tupperware bowls. When I arrived at the banquet hall I had to write my name and address on a list,kind of like what they do at a wake. I went inside this big room that had about 10 long tables lined up against the wall, those were the tables that had the food on them. I put my bucket of chili next to where they had a stack of bowls and silverware. The aroma by that table would put a smile on a hog. I saw butterscotch brownies,fried chicken,fudge, cherry cake,barbequed ribs,apple spice cake and just about any food you can think of.I grabbed a rib and a hunk of the spice cake and sat at one of the tables in the center of the room. It became a feeding frenzy at those tables,people kept going over there for seconds and thirds. I finally saw some lady looking at my chili,she took the lid off and quickly turned her head to the side and put the lid back on. I thought " It can't be that bad . " I waited till the people sat back down and walked over to my chili, I took the lid off and got hit with the worst stench I ever smelled, even poop smelled better than my chili. I think the beans were mad being cooped up with all those peppers and onions I put in there. I decided to keep the lid off,hoping some fresh air in the bucket might weaken the odor. I grabbed another hunk of spice cake and went back to my seat. I then began to panic, what if someone gets sick or dies from eating my chili ? I began to regret signing my name when I came, regretted even more coming in the first place. Taking the lid off that bucket was also a mistake, all those nice smells I encountered when I came in was now buried under the pungent odor of what was in that bucket. They had a stage in that room with a microphone and the host encouraged anyone with talent to come up and perform. Some people thought they could sing, a couple of others told corny office jokes, one guy did a good job impersonating celebrities. The entertainment died down and some guy running for town council got up there looking for votes, he was blabbering on and on...
about zoning issues and stuff. I wanted to tell him to sit down and have a bowl of chili. I decided it was time to leave, I left that bucket of chili behind,I didn't want people to know I was responsible for the terrible odor that stayed in that room all day.

That time I made an extra large portion,I usually make one for about 4-5 servings and never have to refrigerate it because I just leave the pot on top of the gas stove all day and keep snacking on it till it's gone. I tripled all the ingredients for that banquet. This is how I normally make chili;

1 large can of Brooks red beans

1-2 lbs of hamburger (drain all the grease after frying)

1 large white onion (chopped)

about 3 tablespoons of Louisiana hot sauce

about 3 tablespoons of Open Pit barbeque sauce

chop up a red pepper and a green pepper

crush up a handful of nacho Doritos into a powder

that is how I normally do mine.
