Madonna will perform during the Super Bowl XLVI halftime show at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis on February 5, sources close to the event told SBNation.com on Monday. A spokesperson for the NFL declined to comment.

As you'd expect for an artist with her mass appeal, this isn't the first time Madonna's been approached about performing at the Super Bowl. In 1998, it was heavily rumored that Madonna would perform at Super Bowl XXXIII in Miami, only to have the plans fall apart before a deal could be reached. Likewise, Madonna was reportedly to headline the halftime show for Super Bowl XXXV, two years later, but backed out at the last minute.

Two months after speculation first started making the rounds, NBC and NFL tonight confirmed that Madonna will perform during the halftime show at the upcoming Super Bowl XLVI on Feb. 5. Madonna’s set will be created by a team from Cirque du Soleil, Madonna’s frequent collaborator, creative director/choreographer Jamie King, and multimedia artists from Moment Factory. The choice of Madonna continues a recent trend of going with older performers outside of the adults 18-49 demo. Aside from The Black Eyed Peas, the list of recent Super Bowl halftime acts includes The Who, Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, Prince, the Rolling Stones, Paul McCartney and U2.

I'd like to see if she'll actually show up on time. I saw her in concert a few years ago. The show was supposed to start at 7:30. Thought maybe she would have an opening act that we probably wouldn't be interested in, so we got there about 8:30. She didn't have an opening act, but she didn't go on stage until after 10:00!!! Good thing we didn't get there at 7:30!! Alot of other people did though, and some people even left!!

Im a little surprised with the Madonna choice. For a Super Bowl audience thats more family oriented, she has been known to push the envelope.
