I just watched two episodes of WKRP on DVD. "A Commercial Break" and "Who is Gordon Sims?". I was reminded that not only is the cast of WKRP one of the finest comedy ensembles ever assembled but they could handle dramatic scenes with aplomb as well. "Who is Gordon Sims?" is a very dramatic episode about Venus Flytrap's experiences as a soldier in the Vietnam war and why he chose to go AWOL before his hitch was up. This episode showcased some amazing dramatic acting by both Gordon Jump and Tim Reid. I was very impressed at the ability of these fine comic actors to handle this dramatic material so deftly and powerfully.

Interesting, I knew Gordon Jump could actually "act" but I never thought that way about Tim Reid.

Tim Reid was excellent in this episode. He delivered his dramatic dialogue in a way that really made the viewer feel sympathy not only for his character but for everyone who served in Vietnam. It was a powerful performance.

yea, that was a good episode. I haven't seen it in years, but I remember being impressed by that episode when it first aired.

Straight from WKRP expert and one time SO poster Jaime Weinman:

"The DVD/Hulu version is less butchered than most, largely because there is no licensed music in the long second act. But this version restores one song that was cut, plus the original voice-over for Les's news sign-off."
