It Starts To Happen Again

It all started out normally for everyone, yesterday had been Magda’s day off, and so she had made up her mind about a very important thing, Gabriel. Jinny had the day off too, and had seriously debated about calling Teddy! Although she decided not to, she wanted to talk to him very badly.

CD and Nate were sitting at their desks; they both had to work yesterday and had tomorrow off. CD was happy about that, she had intended on just laying around and resting, she needed that!

Kate McCafferty was sitting in her office, thumbing through papers and looking at cases and other assignments for the day. She walked out of her office, “Cases,” she said looking up. She gave assignments to the other officers and then…”Jinny and Magda, homicide, Ashleigh Tyler. No suspects no witnesses. Get on it now.”
”Got it Cap.” Mag answered, taking the folder.
“CD and Nate, one word DARE.”
“Great…this time of year again!” CD started complaining, “Why do I always get the DARE things?”
“Because, I know you can do it.”

Kate walked back into her office, sighed and sat down. If only she knew what a mistake it was to send any of her officers to Delling Elementary (MADE UP NAME!!!), if only she had any idea.

“Hey CD…what’s up with this DARE thing? I mean I know what it is and all I just don’t know why we do it.” Nate asked her.
“We do it because they don’t have enough rookie cops, so they always have to throw one or two inspectors in…unfortunately it’s always me.”
“Ha Ha!!!”
“Yeah…you now have to go through the agony of the sixth grade brats! Get the books from Cap and let’s go…we’ll be late!”
Nate got up and headed into Kate’s office.

Jinny and Mag were in the car heading for Ashleigh Tyler’s house, “So what happened Mag?”


“Somebody slit her throat.”
“How do we know it wasn’t suicide?”
”We Don’t.”
“Great…”Jinny replied.

Nate and CD were at the school setting up, Nate was asking about a bazillion questions about what they do, and CD was just laughing. “Nate, just follow my lead.”
“Fine…why do you always deal with things that way…I’ve heard you told your old partner to wait and observe…’One on One, that’s how I handle things.’ At least that’s what I heard from someone that you told her.”
“Because Nate, does it really matter? You’ve never done DARE before, and I have.”

As kids started filing into the room, CD looked at them. “Nate start handing books to teachers.”
“Yes mommy!” He said to her sarcastically.
“Oh shut up!”

Jinny and Magda had reached the home of Ashleigh Tyler, they got out of the car and walked in.

As they entered the house they saw Ashleigh Tyler in the middle of the floor. “Hey Steven, what happened?” Mag asked looking at her.
“She died between the hours of 4 and 5 AM seeing that it’s 8:30 now it’s been about 4 to 5 hours. Somebody slit her throat, but it looks as if she put up a battle.”
“Could this be suicidal?” Jinny asked him.
“Possibly, but seeing the abrasions all over her body, I’d suspect it was murder.”
“Thanks.” They said in unison walking off.

Meanwhile at the school CD and Nate were in the middle of the DARE presentation, “And so, as I was saying…” CD was talking to the people when a teacher runs in and screams, “SOMEBODY IS IN THE SCHOOL WITH A GUN, HE LOOKS ABOUT FIFTEEN TAKE COVER!!!!!”

CD looked at Nate, ready to go they’d start searching the school, right now they were just looking at each other, “Let’s go CD,” Nate started.
“Yeah let’s go…we’ve got to kill this guy, before he hurts anyone else!”

Nate and CD took off; back up was on the way. “Okay, stay together, if someone’s hurt go for the whoever is trying to kill other people. If one of us goes down, get help and go after the guy, but get a rookie to sit next to the one who’s down. Try to have them stop the bleeding.”
“Shouldn’t I pull whoever it is out of line of fire?”
“If you have time, if not let it be.”
“Fine.”

They continued searching the halls for someone, about fifteen with a gun. Not knowing where he was is dangerous, they’d already heard about five shots, but is anyone dead?

As they turned a corner, they saw him. His back was turned, CD and Nate slowly walked towards him. Being as quiet as possible. But then, CD’s shoes squeaked, if you weren’t listening for it, you couldn’t hear it at all. But he did, he turned and pointed his gun at the two officers.
“If either one of you moves, she’s dead.” He told them, the two careful not to move looked at each other out of the corner of their eyes. He didn’t notice.

“Listen, were not out to get you, we just want you to give us the gun so we can talk to you, maybe take you in for questioning, we don’t want to hurt you.” CD told him, “Just drop the gun.”
“No.”
Nate, not thinking took one step forward, CD screamed at him, “Nate don’t move!!!”
“Too late, say goodnight gracie.” And he shot.

Nate just stared, then shot. Hitting the shooter in the head. Then looked at CD, she was bleeding. Since the shooter was down, for sure, he got down, called emergency places, and checked to see if CD was still breathing. She was, but it was a gruesome sight, she was shot near the stomach, twice. Not knowing if there was extensive damage Nate would have to wait and see, just like everyone else…when they found out that is.

As the emergency medical people got there they searched for injured kids and helped CD. They found a total of six kids, one first grader, 1 second grader, 1 third grader, and 3 fifth graders. Every child except one fifth grader had minor injuries; the fifth grader was killed on the spot.

CD along with other people, was rushed to the hospital Nate following close behind. He was worried about CD; he wanted her to make it through. ‘I should’ve thought before I took that step.’ He told himself as he was following to the hospital.

That was one long and ghastly ride, knowing he may have cost his partner her life. They arrived at the hospital; he got out of his car and ran into the ER waiting room. He sat down, not sure what to do. He decided to call Kate McCafferty, his captain. She could then notify Inspectors Ramirez and Exstead, who happened to be working on a homicide across town.

It was a long wait for Captain McCafferty and his other co-workers to get there, then he had to wait longer for news on CD.

When everyone got there, Nate explained how the whole thing was his fault. Captain McCafferty just looked at him, “Nate, it’s not your fault. You were trying to get the guy. Any good officer would do the same thing you did.”
“But I took the step, he said if anyone moves she goes, and I moved.”
“Nate, you and her were both under a lot of pressure. It could of happened to any of us.” Mag reassured him, but knew that he would still think it was his fault.
“It’s still my fault, let’s just leave it at that.”

Everyone looked at him, knowing it’s not his fault. But he won’t change his mind. He was convinced that he is guilty for whatever happens to CD, and there’s nothing they could do about it.

Jinny and Mag just kind of sat there, glancing at each other occasionally. Kate stared off into space, looking at everyone every once in a while to check that things were OK. Raina looked around…not knowing what to think. Nate just looked around, and thought to himself, he knew it was his fault.

After about ten minutes everyone was antsy, it had already taken ten minutes for everyone to get there; Nate had been there for about 35 now. He didn’t know what to think.
“What’s taking so long???” Magda questioned, wanting to know what was happening to CD.
“Yeah I know, but since six other people, seven including the shooter, injured it could take a while.”

Another five minutes went by, and a doctor walked out. “DeLorenzo?”
Nate and everyone else stood up.
“Wow, are all of you family?”
“No, we are all coworkers.” Nate responded to him.
“Okay well close enough. She’s doing pretty well; she’s stable right now. But we can’t guarantee she’ll stay that way. She was hit once, very close to her liver, and once closer to the heart. Although there was no damage to the heart that we could see today, there was a lot of bleeding and we’ll need to do an exploratory surgery tomorrow to check out if the hearts OK, and the liver. We don’t know how much, but there was damage done to the liver. If it’s too bad we’ll request she go on to a transplant list, if it’s not horrible, we’ll try to repair it. She can live with up to half of her liver gone, any more and chances are she’ll die.”
Everyone just stared, then Kate finally spoke up, “Are you saying she may die?”
“Yes, the odds are about 40% she won’t make it, which is high, but I’ve seen worse cases.”
“Thanks doctor…”
“Oh yes, Dr. Evans.”
“Thanks.” They all said in unison.
“Oh Dr.,” Nate started, “Can she have any visitors?”
“Yes, but with 5 of you, I’d limit it to 2 at a time. And don’t stress her too much, we don’t want any problems.”
“Thanks again Doctor.” Nate told him. And he walked off.

Hey peoples~
I won't be able to post for a while, I'm on my laptop at my grandma's for about three days and don't have the file for my fic (it's on microsoft word) on this one. It's on my actual PC yes, I have both and both are just mine, they sit in my room. But I have to pay for my time on the internet, so thankfully I have one price for unlimited time.

Anyway, I'm going to stop talking now, just tellin' ya I won't make much headway for at least three days! sry!

Everyone was left there, thankful CD was alive, but worried they may find something wrong, as in her liver being completely or almost completely destroyed.
“So, someone should probably go see her…” Kate started when interrupted by Nate.
“I’ll go.”
“Fine, but everyone else wants to see her too. Don’t take too long.” Cap told him.

When Nate arrived at her room he looked in, he felt horrible about what happened to her, and was still convinced it was his fault.

What he saw was an awful sight; she looked quite pale, and was hooked up to a heart monitor. ‘Well he did say one bullet hit close to her heart, that’s probably why.’ He told himself, not really wanting to enter. ‘Here goes nothing.’ And he walked in the door.

“CD, are you okay???”
“Uh, I’ve been better.”
“Listen, I’m sorry,” He started out, “This was all my fault. I took the step and he shot. I should have been thinking. I’m really sorry.”
“Nate, this isn’t your fault. I probably would have done the same thing. You were just doing your job. Don’t take this out on yourself. You didn’t mean to.”
“So, I still may have gotten you killed. And do you have much information on your condition?” He was wondering if she knew about the exploratory surgery.
“Yes Nate, I know about the surgery and anything else I need to…” There was a long beeping tone. Doctors and nurses started rushing in the room pushing Nate back.
“Sir, you need to leave the room.” One shouted at him.

He quickly got out and ran down the hall.
“Nate, is she okay???” Magda asked, Kate and Raina staring at him, while Jinny just looked at the ground.


I know it's not a lot, but I'm workin' on it.
