Sly Stone -- once one of the biggest names in soul music -- now lives in a white van he routinely parks in the rough Crenshaw neighborhood of Los Angeles.

Stone, according to the NY Post, befriended a local family and showers at their house. Their son serves as his assistant and driver.

Stone, whose mega-hits include "Everyday People," says, "I like my small camper. I just do not want to return to a fixed home. I cannot stand being in one place. I must keep moving."

He says his money troubles started in 2009 when he stopped receiving royalty checks from his manager, whom he had accused of fraud. He sued the manager for $50 million.

Stone also foolishly sold his music publishing rights to Michael Jackson for just $1 million in 1984.

He says the FBI is after him and his enemies have hired hit men.

Stone says he's still recording music ... on a laptop computer.

This is sad, and whats even unfortunate is that Sly has burned a lot of bridges with people, so you probably wont see his former bandmates come to his rescue. Not to mention all the money he blew on drugs.

Still sad because this man is a musical genius. If you have not heard the music of Sly & The Family Stone, you are missing one of the greatest bands.

When I was in my early teens, I really got into the 'Stand!' album by Sly & The Family Stone. It had a big impact on me. You just can't get music like that anymore. It's sad that a musical legend and a brilliant artist such as Sly is living hand-to-mouth like this. He deserves better, in spite of his huge mistakes he's made in life. But that's the music business for you. ohno:

To me it sounds like Sly is suffering from some sort of mental illness. Like paranoia. He needs help.

His situation is so sad. I had no idea he was homeless and living in a van. That's pathetic when he used to be a music star. He has nobody to blame but himself for blowing all his money and not saving it. I don't understand why he wouldn't wanna live in a house. It does seem like he has a mental problem. I wonder what his sister thinks about his situation. If she won't let him live with her, then that tells me they don't have a good relationship. I love his Everyday People, I Wanna Thank You For Letting Me Be Myself, Family Affair and Stand songs.
