That started off with one format, but after a time veered off into other format directions, and became another totally different show entirely?.One that I can think of is "Quincy",Jack Klugman's SECOND hit series(1976-1983 NBC /Universal TV),which started out as a show about a coroner who battled the bureaucrats in his quest for real justice, into a show about a coroner who dealt with important issues-nevertheless,it WAS a pretty good show.Know any others that started out with one format but after a time, veered off into other directions?

It's About Time. In the first season two astronauts traveled back in time and lived with prehistoric people. In the second season the prehistoric people traveled back to the present with the astronauts and tried to adjust to modern times.

MASH-it started off as a hilarious sitcom about doctors and nurses at a medical unit during the Korean war, but then in the 4th season, it started veering off into comedy-drama, escepially the last few seasons when every week it was always "we're doctors and we're nurses, and we're so good cause we save lives, and death is such a bummer...."

HAPPY DAYS-it started out as a nice, funny sitcom about a family in the 50s, then became "the Fonzie show" and changed the setting to the 50s dipped in the 70s.
