The Brady Bunch may have very well originated the idea of taking a TV show on the road. While I Love Lucy famously had the Ricardos and Mertzes spend an extended vacation in Hollywood, since the show was filmed in Los Angeles, the series was only taking advantage of its real-life setting. The Bradys traveled to Oahu for a three-episode arc that famously revolved around Bobby’s cursed tiki idol, which brings bad luck to the bunch. After a surfing accident, hostage-taking by a misguided professor and a serenade from Don Ho, the Bradys regain their mojo and leave the island feeling as groovy as ever.

Since then, many shows have taped vacation episodes in Hawaii, including The Jeffersons, Growing Pains, Full House, Saved By The Bell, Cougar Town, and Modern Family.

A year before the Brady's went to Hawaii they went to the Grand Canyon. Some scenes in that three-part episode were shot on location at The Grand Canyon. These were the scenes that took place on the rim of the canyon. The ghost town from part one was actually on the site of the former Bonanza set on the Paramount lot in Hollywood and the scenes at the bottom of the canyon were actually shot in Franklin Canyon in Hollywood.

They didn't originate the idea, they just perfected it. Before them, 'Family Affair' did some multi part vacation episodes in Spain and Tahiti.

The Beverly Hillbillies and Lucille Ball flew to London to do episodes for their respective series in the UK in the 60s. The Hillbillies later went to Silver Dollar City MO.

I agree with this statement. The Bradys also had the advantaged of being filmed in color which made the scenery really pop.
