I like ketchup and mayonnaise. I don't like mustard. I also don't like salsa.

Spread the news: America's favorite condiment is not ketchup or salsa, but Hellmann's mayonnaise, the New York Post reported. Hellmann's racked up $401.2 million in sales last year, according to Businessweek -- nearly a third of the $1.3 billion U.S. mayo market. Heinz Ketchup was a distant third with $278.6 million in sales, edged out by the $286.2 million worth of Tostito's salsa sold last year. Mayo's dominance is such that the varieties account for five of the 10 most popular condiment brands, including Best Foods and Kraft, the Post reported Sunday. According to SymphonyIRI Group, a market-research firm that analyzed the sales data, nearly 400 million containers of mayonnaise were sold in the year ending Sept. 5, 2010. Mustard didn't show up on the list until No. 7, with French’s Classic, which sold $88 million of the yellow stuff last year.

is this strictly grocery sales, or commercial as well? I assume Hellman's gets used in a lot of other products whereas ketchup would not.

Also, mayonnaise is a lot more expensive than ketchup or mustard...

that said, I prefer mayonnaise over ketchup or mustard, but tartar sauce is #1 (which is made with mayo) for me

For me, it depends on what I am eating at the time. I agree with America (from the article) :D I love Hellman's mayonnaise for tuna, and ham and cheese sandwiches. For hot dogs, I love Gulden's spicy brown mustard. I was never a fan of ketchup, though, never had it on anything, even fries.

I LOVE mayo. I can have it with almost anything.

I like mustard too. (my fav. is Grey Poupon)

For me ketchup is tolerable, but I never got into it.

I also like soy sauce (Japanese version), hot sauce, A1 Steak Sauce, and the classic salt & pepper.



I don't care for salsa, oil & vinegar, relish, and duck sauce.

I love ketchup! I pretty much eat it on everything. I like it on hot dogs, hamburgers, french fries. I don't really care for it on eggs.

I hate mustard! I think it's disgusting. I can't even stand the smell of it and when I see someone putting it on their hot dog or hamburger, it makes me gag. They are ruining a perfectly good hot dog or hamburger.

I like mayo and Miracle Whip, soy sauce, tartar sauce, cocktail sauce, and salsa.

I hate mayo,looks like bird poop. I like mustard and catsup but my favorite is bar b que sauce, it goes on everything, chili, spaghetti etc... my top brand is open pit.

I've never met a condiment I don't like :lol: For me, most foods have to be jazzed up with something. I put ketchup on fries, burgers, eggs, hot dogs. I put mustard on hot dogs, too (as well as the occasional burger). Mayo is good for sandwiches and burgers. Oil and vinegar has always been an awesome combo for salads and sandwiches. In short...condiments rock :happyface

And praise be to God, Hellman's light tastes great for 1/3 of reg mayo's calories.

Mine is STILL Ketchup.

But Mayo is #2, followed by Mustard. I've been using Ketchup less and less lately since I use tomatoes on like burgers or sandwiches where ketchup would be on.

That's okay...I sometimes put mayo on Hot Dogs as well as Ketchup. (Unless it's Chicago-style Dogs where I just back-off the ketchup since there's tomatoes on the dog, it's like Ketchup but it's the beginnings of ketchup since it's tomatoes).

I never thought dipping carrots into mayo was all that wierd - it's pretty much a small step away from dipping them in russian or french or another mayo based dressing. In the olden days, I would once and a while dip my french fries into mayo. Sadly, those days are long gone.

The only negative thing I have to say abt reg mayo are the calories (and fat - if you have to watch that). But Hellman's light (or Trader Joe's light) are really pretty good (I actually like them better than the real deal) and only 1/3 the cals of reg mayo. Still quite a bit of calories but down to 33 from 100.

Monika, I LOVE mayo, too!! I rather dip my fries in mayo than ketchup. I also dip my fries in blue cheese dressing. I do NOT like Miracle Whip. When I get a sub, I ask for extra mayo, they still don't put on enough and I put on more when I get home. I'm a mayo fiend!!

I prefer Miracle Whip over mayo. Also like mustard(the spicier the better), ketchup, tartar sauce, horseradish, hot sauce. And salsa with chips is excellente.
