The Disney vault opened its hefty doors, unleashed a 3-D fury of Jeremy Irons’s draggiest performance, and stormed the box office this weekend with The Lion King 3D’s downright impressive opening tally. I hope this means we’ll be hearing about 3-D re-releases of (forgive me) better Disney movies soon. Give me Aladdin, 101 Dalmatians, and The Rescuers back, please. We have to get children to listen to Bob Newhart’s classic drollness somehow! I don’t think The Button-Down Mind of Bob Newhart is available on iTunes yet.

Apparently moviegoers did not share my fear that The Lion King 3D would look like an average episode of The Real Housewives of New Jersey, because they came out in droves (prides?) to see Simba, Nala, Mufasa and that bitter queen Scar romp around in the grasslands. Why do all Disney villains look the same? I can’t tell Scar apart from Jafar or Kevin Jonas.

I saw this with my grandfather in the theater in August of 1994. I was spending a few days with my grandparents and Grandma wanted to stay home one day, so I suggested that Grandpa and I see a movie. We checked the listings and almost every movie was either rated R or just didn't look interesting. That left The Lion King, so we went to see that, and I'm glad we did. To this day, whenever I think of The Lion King, I think of Grandpa.

I used to like the little "Easter Eggs" Disney used to put in their Animated Movies.

1. Oliver and Company One of the 101 Dalmations makes a Cameo Appearance

2. Beauty and the Beast When Maurice gets lost in the woods, am old, weather-beaten sign points to Aniheim.

3. Aladdin Sebastion the Crab (From The Little Mermaid, makes a Cameo Appearence

4. The Lion King Homage to In the Heat of the Night

5. Mulan Homage to Clint Eastwood

6. Hercules Homage to Marilyn Monroe

7. The Hunchback of Notre Dame Belle (From Beauty and the Beast) and Scar (From The Lion King) make Cameo Appearances, Homages to The Three Stooges and The Wizard of Oz

8. The Emperor's New Groove Homage to The Fly

An interesting fact is that The Lion King was actually the last hand-drawn animation film from Disney.

The year after that it became all CGI when they did Toy Story.

What I meant was is that it was the last hand-drawn film before the CGI craze.

After Toy Story Disney still did hand-drawn, but it was more of a novelty, and it is no longer in their interest.

The recent Princess and the Frog was hand-drawn.

AS much as I loved the Toy Story Pixar franchise, it really is sad to see hand drawn fare not get respect anymore.

They recently tried to bring hand-drawn animation back when they released The Princess and the Frog in 2009.

However, it didn't turn out to be the hit that Disney was expecting so they went CGI with their next release Tangled. That one was more successful.

Wow, it's been 17 years since the original release of The Lion King. I remember seeing it back then. It's been a favorite Disney movie of mine. Only movie that tops it, imo, is E.T. which is my favorite. :)

Yes it was, however it's not from Disney.

I saw The Lion King actually twice back it was first released back in 1994. Don't remember too much about what my thoughts were while seeing it, but I know that I fell absolutely in love with the movie and now, 17 years later, it still remains one of my top favorite films of all time. :D

The Lion King was beautifully drawn and a beautiful story too, would love to see it again soon. :)
