Behind every wunderkind, there's the supermom who raised him. Michael J. Fox took home three Emmys for his portrayal of Republican brainiac Alex P. Keaton, but where was the Academy's love for the matriarch of the Keaton family? As ex-hippie Elyse, Baxter took the sitcom mom into the modern era — not only could she teach a master class in heart-to-heart talks, Elyse was smart, sexy, opinionated, and fiercely protective of her children (just ask handsy Uncle Arthur).

She was never nominated for FT, but scored two nominations for her role as Nancy Lawrence Maitland on Family and also got a nod for her turn as Betty Broderick in the TV movie A Woman Scorned. Michael Gross was never nominated either, and I think his comedic talents were just as worthy as MJF. "There was a kangaroo...in my living room."

I think both Meredith Baxter and Michael Gross should have been nominated. They were great performers. The episode Birthday Boy (Season 2) where Alex tells Elyse he doesn't see her as a person and she makes it clear that she's a real person with real feelings and the finale where she was so emotional over Alex leaving. She could act.
Micheal Gross had one-liners that were funny. For example in the episode Help Wanted (Season 3) he puts toast in the toaster which Karen (the temporary housekeeper) broke. The toast goes flying across the room. Steven picks up a piece of toast and tells Alex, "If this had been a poptart, we'd be dead now."

Wasn't that the one where he was going to "invade Canada" to impress some girls?

The problem was Meredith Baxter was not a good sitcom actress. She was a dramatic actress and her acting range showed more on Family than it did on Family Ties.
