David Angell, the creator and executive producer of Kelsey Grammer’s Emmy-winning sitcom, was returning to the Left Coast from his summer home in Chatham with his wife, Lynn, on Flight 11 out of Boston.

Before moving to L.A. to work in the entertainment industry, Angell had been an engineer in Boston and worked for an insurance firm in Rhode Island. He sold his first script in 1977 and was a writer for the long-running, set-in-Boston sitcom “Cheers.”

That was such a sweet tribute.

When I first heard about this I thought it was the sweetest gesture. There was a special on TV Guide last week that talked about this very thing. It was called TV's Most Unforgettable Finales and Jane Leeves explained about Niles and Daphne's son being named David and why. She said something like "He was our little angel named after an angel."
It was very sweet. I love it when shows do things like that. It brought tears to my eyes hearing about it and watching it on TV. I'm glad it was Niles and Daphne's son that was named David because they are my favorite couple and that makes it even more special. Definitely a great way to remember David Angell. :D :(

It's always been obvious how much the cast and crew of Frasier loved David Angell. I remember watching an interview with Kelsey Grammer and Bebe Neuwirth not long after the attacks - and they were both were dissolved in tears when they talked about the Angells. :(

Is there a video of the tribute? I read the article and I do thank you for posting it because I was curious about how David got his name and who exactly David Angell was. I wrote to David Hyde Pierce back in March but I am VERY anxious to write him again. As soon as I find a good address I'm going to, and I'm definitely going to mention David Angell. How horrible to lose someone at any time but especially on 9/11.

Had to reply again.. OMG, did you guys read the last part of this article where it talks about James Woods being on the flight with the would-be terrorists? That really makes me angry that he was concerned enough to tell the flight crew about his fears and they just 'dismissed them. I bet that wouldn't happen now. Or God, I hope not!

I would love to see that interview.

I don't remember which show they were interviewed on (and their segments were filmed separately), but it was right after the attacks - within a few days. It was heartbreaking.

I'm glad to know how he got his name, because I had been wondering about that very thing. It seemed there had to be some sort of significance to the name because I knew that one of Daphne's brothers was named David so it didn't seem like a likely name they would have chosen. I also didn't think they'd name him after the actor (DHP) particularly... so of course now it all makes sense. I can't believe it didn't occur to me before that that was the significance.

Don't feel bad because I didn't know either. I kind of wish they would have had a sequence with Niles and Daphne naming the baby and maybe inadvertently mentioning David Angell (not by name but maybe saying that he was a special person who worked with Niles or something like that. Kind of an 'inside secret' if you will. It's hard to explain but hopefully you all know what I mean. Not sure why I never thought about that before.

Do you think it would have had the same significance if the baby had been a girl and they named her Angel? I was just sitting here wondering about that.
Niles and Daphne's first child was a girl in Daphne's vision in Rooms with a View, their second child was a girl as well. I think they made the baby a boy so they could name him David to honor David Angell. Either way, it was a wonderfully sweet and amazing gesture. Made even better than it was Niles and Daphne's son. :)
