The 1970's were famous for variety shows and musical episodes. It actually got me thinking if Mary or Ted Or Lou ever broke out in song, could it have worked?

Well we know Mary can sing because she sang numerous times on "The Dick Van Dyke Show" but could any of the other cast members carry a tune? If they could then I think a musical episode could have worked. It worked on other shows of that era like "The Brady Bunch".

I didn't realize Mary could sing? I do know Ted Knight came out with a music album, but I think it was more for laughs than anything else.

Well, Mary Tyler Moore could sing, but Mary Richards couldn't! Remember "One for my Baby"? Hilarious! In the same episode, Georgette performed "Steam Heat", and was pretty good!
Anyway, I don't think an actual musical episode would have worked. The show was almost entirely "naturalistic", with the exception of the episode where they depicted what it would be like for Murray, Ted, or Lou to be married to Mary.
