They went out exactly the way they wanted to - on top of their game! They were still making quality TV and probably could have carried on for 2 or 3 more seasons (in fact Rose Marie and Morey Amsterdam wanted to continue). But Carl Reiner and Dick Van Dyke wanted to end the show while it was still popular. And besides Dick and Mary Tyler Moore both had offers on the table to act in movies and Carl Reiner had offers to write and produce movies so they were ready to move on to other challenges. So they left us with a legacy of 5 excellent seasons of quality television which to this day bring us laughter, fun, and enjoyment!

The final episode aired in late May or June, but then the show had summer reruns. The final scheduled prime time broadcast was September 7, 1966.
