When talking about classic sitcoms, people talk about shows like The Brady Bunch, Andy Griffith Show, The Dick Van Dyke Show, I Love Lucy, Happy Days, All in the Family etc...
Why is poor Bob not recognized for a classic show?
On the other hand, would we still be talking about Bob's other show, "Newhart," if not for the classic finale which brought back The Bob Newhart show?
So, my question is this, is The Bob Newhart Show underrated or not???

I think it's totally underrated - and I think it tends to get lost in the shuffle because it wasn't a social agenda show like All in the Family, M*A*S*H, etc.

The Bob Newhart Show is a thinking persons comedy--no cheap put-downs. I always knew this was a quality show as a kid but you dont really appreciate it until you are an adult

It is underappreciated for sure. I like the early years of Newhart, as well, but feel it pails in comparison to The Bob Newhart Show. From what I can tell, the average person doesn't even have an awareness of the classic shows of the 50s through the 70s, and indeed probably not the 80s or 90s.
It's crazy to me that current shows are out on DVD weeks after the end of a season and we have to wait years for the final seasons of The Bob Newhart Show.

As Marcia Wallace (Carol) said in one of the DVD commentaries, to Bob, on why the show was/is underrated: "You make it look SO easy!" She's got a good point!!

Very underrated show. This was a relationship sitcom and that was the crux of the show. Bob Newhart and Suzanne Pleshette were believable and convincing as husband and wife. I ranked them as the top married TV couples of all times. The best one of the 70s.
