West Palm Beach, Fla. -- It appears old dogs can learn new tricks. Hero, a greyhound retired from the race track, will become one in November when he begins his new life as a service dog for veterans, WPBF 25 News' Terri Parker reported.
The Palm Beach Kennel Club on Friday introduced him as the first racer to start a second career as a service dog. "Many times people think retired racers are couch potatoes, and they are in some instances," Greyhound Pets of America spokeswoman Barbara Masi said. "But they are athletes. They have been working dogs all their lives, and they do like to continue working, and this is an exciting thing. This is the first time they've been used as service dogs for service men and women."
Hero has been flying through his training; he already knows how to support a person who needs help with balance and how to travel in a car or airplane, Parker reported. Hero will be paired up with his lucky new master on Veterans Day in a couple of months.
