'Beau' Answers Simple Math Problems With Barks

A black Labrador retriever in Montana is winning acclaim not for his hunting prowess, but his math skills. Ask Beau what the square root of nine is and he'll answer you -- in barks. "He counts, he adds and subtracts, he can do some division and has memorized square roots," owner David Madsen told Reuters.

Madsen does try to keep the answers at 10 and below, but he doesn't use signals to sneak Beau the answer and rewards him with a treat each time he answers correctly. The retired AT&T executive adopted Beau a dozen years ago and began teaching him math basics when he showed signs of being intelligent. As a puppy, Beau invented games and crafted intricate strategies to avoid capture, Madsen said. "I've had dogs all my life, but this dog is different. He's super smart," Madsen said.
