...Or was he just a nice fit to an already solid cast?

In my humble opinion, Randall Carvers character and story arc were so annoying - he was a teeny bit likable but overall a real clunker ESP in that cast - that being said, the recast for the empty cast slot was sheer genius - Rev Jim is what lots of people first think of when Taxis mentioned; he is often discussed on those all time greatest tv characters lists & usually ranking hi - but yeah A NICE FIT TO A SOLID CAST - i always thought the third season was the best cast / season of taxi ever

Rev. Jim didn't "save" Taxi because it didn't need saving. They had a solid cast and great writing already. That being said Rev. Jim was a very nice fit and a very memorable character!
OH Nuts!

Exactly.
Louie and Alex were the mainstays imo - either one went the show would have suffered a blow.

The "Reverend Jim" character did much more for the show than what Randall Carver's character did.
Lloyd played Jim very well, and with a heart. I think his character added much to the show.
Sorry to dredge up an older topic, but for my first post I thought it was fitting.
