Bert And Ernie Gay Marriage? "Sesame Street" Says No
8/11/11

Bert and Ernie will not be getting married. To each other, or anyone else.

The demands of a petition calling for Bert and Ernie to get married, which has become an internet sensation in the last few years, has been gently denied by the Sesame Street Workshop, who issued this statement on their Facebook page:

"Bert and Ernie are best friends. They were created to teach preschoolers that people can be good friends with those who are very different from themselves.

Even though they are identified as male characters and possess many human traits and characteristics (as most Sesame Street Muppets do), they remain puppets, and do not have a sexual orientation."

This isn't the first time the organization has moved to deny a sexual relationship between their two roommate puppets; in June 2010, a tweet sent from the Sesame Street Twitter account from Bert that said his mohawk was more "mo" than "hawk" was suspected by bloggers to be a sort of coded acknowledgment of their relationship.

Bloggers also took as a hint the large number of gay guest stars from that season, to which "Sesame Street" responded, "We've always reached out to a variety of actors and athletes and celebrities to appear on the show, and our programming has always appealed to adults as much as children."

The whole subject is ridiculous. If anyone seriously thinks that Jim Henson intended for Bert and Ernie to be gay, they obviously never watched the show or just misinterpret things to fit their own social agenda.

Let's leave the kids' shows free from politics.

I agree with the Sesame Street Workshop. Puppets do not have a sexual orientation and it's wrong for anyone to try and impose one on them.

Well said.

I support gay marriage, but I agree with "Sesame Street" on this one.

Me, too. On both counts.

I have nothing against gay marriage myself but what preschooler is going to care if any Muppets are married? I mean, I don't even think I understood what marriage was in those days!

I agree with "Sesame Workshop" too....

It's like "Friends", Joey and Chandler share an apartment...but Chandler Bing was in love with Monica Geller. (This is similar to Bert and Ernie... roommates, not gay)!

What will happen next...Marcie and Peppermint Patty getting married?!

Most kids who watch Sesame Street would have little to no knowledge of marriage (well I didn't anyway), so having E&B getting married would have been wrong, as it would have corroded the minds of many young brains out there.

Also, if you ask me, Ernie & Bert have more of an Odd Couple relationship, marrying them would detract from that.
