Spice Girls' Girl Power Legacy to Live on in New Musical 'Viva Forever'

The girl power legacy of '90s pop supergroup Spice Girls will live on in the form of an upcoming musical production named for their 1998 hit, 'Viva Forever.'

The show will be inspired by the hit songs of the beloved British girl group.

"I've heard a little bit about the story but it's top secret. We've been in touch with the producer and the writer," Emma Bunton (Baby Spice) teased.

That producer is Judy Craymer, producer of 'Mamma Mia!' and the writer is star of the British comedy series "Absolutely Fabulous", Jennifer Saunders. Celebrated British theater director Marianne Elliot will direct the musical.

According to Craymer, 'Viva Forever' is "all about female friendship, celebrity and fame." She continued, "'Viva Forever' will encompass the Spice Girls ethos of friendship, identity and being true to yourself."

The show will not, however, be a biographical piece on the pop stars' rise to fame. "It won't be a tribute or bio show, nor will it feature characters with any of the names of the famous five piece," Craymer explained.

Melanie Chisholm (Sporty Spice) also ruled out appearing onstage telling the Daily Star, "The script is funny and emotional. But there won't be any cameos from us."

The Spice Girls get a Broadway play, while amazing underrated artists like Jackson Brown, Mary Chapin Carpenter, Beth Hart, and Tracy Chapman never have. Is it just me, or is their something really wrong with this picture?? Kids today! lol

The Spice Girls Reunite to Promote New Musical
6/26/2012
by THR Staff

Posh, Scary, Baby, Sporty and Ginger Spice are back together again.

Or, at least they were on Tuesday for a brief promotional event to announce a musical based on their music from the 1990s.

Former Spice Girls members Victoria Beckham, Melanie Brown, Emma Bunton, Melanie Chisholm and Geri Halliwell gathered together Tuesday in London 12 years after they split for the announcement of Viva Forever!, opening at the Piccadilly Theatre in London's West End on December 11.

The promotional event, which took place at the same hotel where the group filmed the video for 1996’s “Wannabe,” was the first time the British pop group had been together since their reunion tour in 2007 and 2008.

Viva Forever! comes from Mamma Mia! producer Judy Craymer, and will be written by British comedian Jennifer Saunders. The story is about a group of friends “who get swept up in the obsession of today’s TV celebrity culture,” according to producers.

The Spice Girls rocketed to fame in the ‘90s after the release of their smash hit “Wannabe.” Their debut album, Spice, sold more than 28 million copies worldwide and became the best-selling album by a female group in music history.

In 1997, they released the film Spiceworld and after Halliwell left the group in 1998, they went on to release their third album, Forever.
