View Full Version : Is Youtube the greatest creation for classic TV fans?
TVFactFan 08-03-2011, 02:06 AM This site really takes you back in time and allows to see some gems that most people thought they would never see. For example, i have never seen Checking in with marla gibbs but thanks to you tube I now know what the them song sounds like and saw a promo for the show.
Plus you get to sample and watch all the shows TV land and N@N don't air anytime you want in addition to old commercials and any other old tv program. Do you agree that youtube was the best thing that ever happened to classic tv fans?
Schmoopie 08-03-2011, 04:48 AM I love YouTube and it has allowed me to see many things from TV that I thought were lost forever! Just an amazing and wonderful site! I've found countless songs, TV shows, interview clips, etc on Youtube and I just love it!
MikeLutton 08-03-2011, 08:15 AM yeah when it works then its great i like the old news reports and old tv promos back in the day i got my own channell on there check it out.
benjamoon 08-03-2011, 10:31 AM I like a lot of things about YouTube including seeing classic commercials but I would have to say that TV shows on DVD are the best thing to happen to Classic TV.
MickeyMac 08-03-2011, 04:18 PM I like a lot of things about YouTube including seeing classic commercials but I would have to say that TV shows on DVD are the best thing to happen to Classic TV.
Agreed
mets82 08-03-2011, 05:03 PM I LOVE YOUTUBE!!! I mean it has everything you would ever want. The networks wont show the classic promos, shows, commericals etc. but youtube does. I dont know how it all started but Im glad it did.
The thing that aggravates about youtube isn youtube itself but when people lurk on there and make people take down there youtube videos. I think its fun to look down memory lane because a lot of it thats shown I wasnt even born yet. Like I said, the reason why youtube bothers me is because people lurk around and take videos down. They say its copyright and all that stuff.
What I dont understand is that we have high unemployment, raising gas prices, people are losing there homes, people are living paycheck to paycheck, television is in the toilet with all the reality shows, people have no medical insurance but hey taking videos down from youtube is more important.
I dont want this to turn into a political battle here because there are other forums on the board for that. It doesnt matter which side of the fence your on. My point is, there much bigger problems here then having someone be forced to take down youtube videos.

The theme for the show is heard during the promo for checking in
CaliforniaKid 08-03-2011, 09:22 PM I have never been much of a youtube fan I dont really like watching low quality video on my computer, I would much rather watch on my tv.

No one cares about quality when viewing videos on youtube
yankeesrj12 08-04-2011, 04:07 AM No one cares about quality when viewing videos on youtube
I do. If a video has AWFUL quality, I just move on.
McGillicuddy 08-04-2011, 10:30 AM The greatest creation for classic TV fans is of course TV DVD Sets. But there is so much nostalgic stuff that has shown up on youtube, short-lived tv series or tv series that haven't been seen for decades, tv specials, old commercials,
favorite celebrity rare appearences on talk shows, variety shows, specials or other scripted shows, anyways, stuff that rarely gets put on commerial dvd sets.
CaliforniaKid 08-04-2011, 06:00 PM No one cares about quality when viewing videos on youtube
Exactly thats my point thats why I dont like it as it seems many of the uploaders of the videos dont care about quality either, I prefer higher quality viewing.

Why is quality important when it's only being viewed on a computer? Not like it's on your TV in your living room

How can you watch something when its barely visible? When you have an HD television and try to watch a low quality video on YouTube, it sucks!

I never said anything about "barely visible." I said the quality doesn't have to be perfect for me to enjoy a youtube video

Ah, sorry for misinterpreting your words. Still, watching low quality videos on YouTube is never fun for me.
70s show watcher 08-04-2011, 09:26 PM i go there almost every day you just never know what you will find there plus it gives people a chance to sample shows that they have not seen or better yet childhood shows that you may think you want to buy from collectors but then you watch an ep on youtube and find that the show just dosent hold up for you an example of this happend to me a while back when i was a kid i loved thhe game show blankety blanks with bill cullen and looked to buy an ep for years well an ep turned up on youtube not long ago and i watched it for the first time in 35 years and for some reason thhe show just wasant as exciting as i remembered so that not only saved me alot of hassle but alot of money too
McGillicuddy 08-04-2011, 10:07 PM I think everyone would agree, of course we'd rather watch anything on hi-def, big screen tv or on dvd or blu ray. Youtube is great for rare video footage thats not available anywhere else. Whereelse can you see the "where's the beef" commercial with the elderly lady from the '80s, or a selection of The Church Lady skits from SNL, or the intro to a tv series that lasted 4 episodes in the 70's?
waichingliu81 08-05-2011, 08:15 PM i love you tube- it's like cable tv, national tv but you get to select what YOU want to watch. i watch sitcoms, cartoons, music vids, interviews with my fav stars, old clips that i never knew existed.
can't live without YT! :)
I like the videos uploaded by former network affiliate technicians. They usually have access to old BETA masters from tape delays.
UMFaninMD 08-06-2011, 02:41 PM Thanks to YouTube, I'm able to relive some of the shows that I enjoyed when I was young, and I love watching old news broadcasts from the 60's, 70's and 80's---when reporters actually reported on and read the news objectively without sounding like snarky opinionated idiots. I also enjoy listening to old AM and FM radio airchecks too. It's a nostalgia lover's dream.
ReallyRetroChick 08-08-2011, 04:01 PM I agree about enjoying YouTube. For some reason I like to view the older openings before movies of the week, etc. I'm not sure what they are called. For instance the WOR tv Million Dollar Movie openings. Sometimes it's just the catchy music or the graphics. It takes me back to a simpler time. Remember the ABC movie of the week from around 1970? Seeing that turns me into a kid again

Exactly, stuff you'd never be able to see anywhere else!!!! That's the appeal of YOUTUBE!

I haven't checked to see if Youtube has these shows
Chico and The Man
Alice
UMFaninMD 08-08-2011, 09:26 PM I love those too. What's even cooler is that there are a few users who post hard-to-find TV movies on there, especially the scary ones that they always aired and had high caliber actors (for the time) who weren't afraid to be seen in a horror movie.

This is why I don't post videos on YouTube. I could find other sites that have some great classic TV shows on them and upload some of their videos to YouTube, but then, eventually, someone might catch on and complain about copyright infringement, whether it be one of the main TV networks, the original rights holders or just some lonely smartass geek looking for attention. When someone does get caught, you tend to feel sorry for them until you realize they're breaking the law, but sometimes, as in real life, the wrong people end up getting hurt. For example, my favourite YouTube channel, as well as that of many loyal viewers, was run by a 23 year old girl named Shane who called her channel Retroteevee. This had episodes from many of my favourite series including "My Three Sons", "The Andy Griffith Show", "Leave It To Beaver", "Gidget", "The Odd Couple", and complete series sets of "The Brady Bunch" and "Family Affair". In all, the channel had exactly 1445 videos and about almost that many followers, many of which are now royally pissed at YouTube and whoever forced them to take down those videos which had taken more than 2 years to complete but were quickly and forcefully removed about 2 weeks ago. (One of the alleged squealers was NBC/Universal who couldn't leave well enough alone. ) This channel had become so popular that she made a sequel which she called Retroteevee2 (http://www.youtube.com/user/retroteevee2) There isn't much to see on there except a few episodes of "Rhoda" and "Dennis The Menace" and the first 2 seasons of "The Partridge Family". I'm sure she would have added to the list if the first channel hadn't been wiped out but now that appears unlikely unless she gets some support and encouragement. Once you see the clips, read some of the comments that follow them and you'll see how unfair all of this is. My heart goes out to her after all she's been through and I hope everything will work out for her. Maybe she can re-post some of her earlier work but then YouTube will only be watching more closely. I would dearly love to help her. Any ideas?
mets82 08-17-2011, 09:11 PM I cant help but you know this is what I mean. I think NBC/Universal have far bigger problems to worry about then to take down a youtube video. I mean enough already. So basically, if I wanted to see some old NBC promos from the 60s, I cant watch them because NBC will take them down. Now, Im 29 yrs. old so what NBC is saying is that even though you were not born in the 60s as far as you watching old stuff, your out of luck. I dont think thats fair. Why should people get penalized because they werent born yet or too young to remember?
To me, especially now with all the reality stuff, we should be embracing our past, not trying to tear it down.

A great example of that, at least in my opinion, is a late edition from KTRK Eyewitness News in Houston from 1986. Check it out and see what you think!

I agree with you, the site is pretty good but it's a shame when they make people take down their videos because of copyright issues. I had a bunch of favorites & now half of them are gone for that very reason.

Chico and The Man
Alicei saw some chico and the man eps there a few days ago
Solomon,
I found a good channel for you on YouTube! It's called LaughVids (http://www.youtube.com/user/laughvids#p/a) and it has episodes of "Chico and the Man" plus most of the Norman Lear comedies. I hope you like it!
USATVFAN 08-20-2011, 03:07 PM Yes! I like going on YouTube and watching episodes of Old TV Shows and Classics. Especially one that you can not find on tv anymore or one that only have 1 DVD release. Or no dvd's release. Thank to one user(maudetvshow) I was able to watch all 140 Episodes of Maude on YouTube. Only Season 1 is out on dvd. and I was So happy when I found all the episodes of Maude from season 2-6 on YouTube!. I had a blast watching them. I also found a lot of episodes for the later years of The Jefferson (season 7-11) that are not on did. . It a great place to go to find old Tv shows that you can't find on tv or did.
