As A sitcom I mean. Was Pam Dawber really needed as a character for this show to get off the ground and work or was she just a complementary piece?

I think if Pam Dawber had any reason to leave the series during its run, the show could have easily been re-tooled. Mork's character could still have worked if say, he moved in with some average American family, (kind of like on Alf).

I think Mindy was the perfect companion/friend/guide/love interest and emotional counterpoint to Mork. Her practical, and conservative personality really worked well against Mork's zany but innocent personality. For me, this was really the strongest point of the show and if you took it away it just wouldn't have worked as well as it did.

Yea I agree. And remember how the ratings dropped after Mindy's father and grandmother were written out. Could you imagine what would have happened if Mindy was gone?
