I am watching the episode Semi-Decent Proposal, one of the episodes I hadn't seen yet and I am confused about something.
I just got done watching a scene with Martin, Roz, Niles and Daphne. Daphne brought Roger Rabbit and thought he was the funniest, Roz brought Caddyshack and thought that the gopher was the funniest and Niles had the Unbearable Lightness of Being. At the end of the scene he said "Who's funnier than Daniel Day-Lewis?"
The audience had a big reaction and laughed. Peri Gilpin looked over at where John Mahoney was and had a smile on her face and David Hyde Pierce looked around with a funny look on his face after saying what I posted above. Jane just sat there eating popcorn with no reaction at all.
Was there an inside joke to that line or what? Did I miss something? Please let me know. Thanks! :)

The scene I'm talking about starts at around 3:56. Watch the scene until the end so you will know what I'm talking about.

Thanks for posting that episode. It's been a while since I've seen it. That scene is pretty funny! I'm going to guess that the Daniel Day Lewis line was something that DHP improvised, just by the look on his face. It was really cute, though!

Niles is so adorable in it! Oh wait... I say that about every episode he's in, don't I? ;) I just love when he grins at 3:45!!!

Not sure, but it does look like an improve. From your message, I thought Roz was going to shoot Martin a look, rather than just look his way. It does look as if the other actors don't know how to respond with Nile's commment. Nice catch.

I'm watching this episode - had to pause it and find this post. It looks like the scene your talking about took several takes. When Roz, Daph and Niles are on the couch and Marty is wiring the DVD player, there is a loud squeech and Roz starts to laugh/smile and tries to hide it.

I think the line you are talking about "Who's funnier than Daniel Day-Lewis?" is an improv joke that David told. Daph states, "Who's funnier than Roger Rabbitt?" And Roz states, "Who's funnier than that little gopher?" (Cadyshack).

It looks like DHP couldn't resist to improv the joke about the actor from his "non-comedy" DVD pick.

Thanks for clearing that up. I was just wondering if I was just totally blind and stupid for not figuring out why the audience found that line so totally funny when I didn't understand why. But since you explained it, I understand it a bit more and now I actually find it funny. DHP was always funny with those improv lines of his. If you don't know DHP than you won't understand his improv but since I know him pretty well from watching Frasier and I find almost everything he said on Frasier funny. He's funny even when he's not trying to be funny. He's exceptional. :)
