Why would J.J and hios friends who were in ther early 20's in 1977 buy a car from Bookman from 1954?
I'm sure a group of 20 year old guys today would not buy a 1988 car to drive around in 2011 so that's why this episode makes no sense

Well, for one thing, regardless of age, they needed a car in order to get around.
The other thinh is that they were so wrapped up in their weekly activities, that they got one track minded and didn't consider the age of the car. Plus, Bookman conned the gang into buying his car.
Anyway, the whole thing backfired on Bookman, when the car became a lemon, and they conned Bookman into buying it back, and the car got demolished at the end.

But the purpose of a guy getting a car is usually to impress chicks so for them to buy a 1954 car was kind of odd.

True, although in that particular episode, it didn't seem like JJ and his friends were focusing on impressing chicks, but more like getting from place to place.

The bigger question is, when did JJ and Thelma get driver's licenses?
