View Full Version : Do you proofread your threads, and posts?
Brad Russ 07-16-2011, 07:27 PM I'm actually really big on proof reading. I do it with every thread, or post that I make. I just like trying to have the best grammar possible. I don't mind when other people do it, but I can't stand when I make gramatic errors in posts, which I unfortunately do alot of. Sometimes when I make a long post, I'll proof read it up to three times, and make many changes like using different words to describe things, and fixing spelling errors, and stuff like that. Anyway, do any of you proof read?

I usually make gramatic errors but most of them understand what I am trying to say so it is pointless to correct it so most of the time I do not proof-read

80sTrivia 07-17-2011, 07:43 AM I almost always go over my posts to see if I have made any spelling or grammatical errors before I hit the post button. I also usually read my post after it has been posted to the board just to check once again. If I see a mistake, I normally edit it as quickly as possible!
tv star collector 07-17-2011, 09:51 AM Yes, I do. I have always been a stickler for spelling, punctuation and grammar. At the hospital where I used to work, I was constantly finding misspelled words in interoffice memos. A co-worker told me that I missed my calling; I should have been a proofreader! :)
Penny Lane 07-17-2011, 10:16 AM I generally proofread my threads. I hate to see a misspelled word or typo in my posts. I'm really big on spelling.:p

That's exactly what I do.

I don't know if you, or anybody else feels this way, but I hate how when you edit one of your posts, how at the bottom of your post it will say that it was edited. I just don't like the way it looks. That's why I try to make edits as quickly as I can, because if you correct it within five minutes, the edit message won't show up. I really do wish that the edit message would go away. It's kind of pointless to tell someone that your post was edited. What difference does it make? I don't know, I'm probably making too much out of nothing, but it's just always been one of my pet peeves.

I have seen on other sites that there is no time delay. If you delete something 30 seconds later, a minute later, five minutes later, etc. it will show up as edited. For example on imdb.com and on Frasier Mania. If you edit something, even immediately, it shows up as being edited on those sites.
So luckily on SO, you are given a small window of about 15 minutes or so. It's better than nothing. Just my thoughts and opinion.

You are right Jen, and I am glad that they give us that little window to change things. I can't really compare SO to other message boards, since this is the only one I visit, other than ESPN's message boards. It would be nice though if they could just do away with it. Definitely doesn't hurt to ask. I asked them several years ago, if they could put up a gender option on people's profiles, and TJ was nice enough to do it. I just think it's pretty cool how the guy running this site, (TJ) actually listens to what we all have to say, and usually responds. Very rare in message boards that I've visited over the years. Anyway, this is obviously not a big issue, as I know most peeps don't really care. Like I said, it's just one of my many pet peeves.
Retro4Life 07-17-2011, 02:13 PM Yeah I proof read my posts. There's a lot of stuff I don't know a darned thing about but grammar is one I do know something about and I don't want to start getting lax with that.
robyrob 07-17-2011, 06:52 PM i pay Cactus Jack to prooofread my posts and write jokes - he doesn't do a very gpood job but he works CEAP.
Janice 07-17-2011, 07:22 PM I try to make my posts look as good as they can, but it seems I often spot a mistake down the road, long after it matters, if it ever really did. You can thank me for that 15 minute window. It used to be ONE minute. *takes bow*

Mr. Television 07-17-2011, 07:39 PM Me proof read? Never! I make my fair share of grammatical or spelling errors; and to be honest, I am indifferent, if I make a mistake or not (Oh! Well); this is a board where an individual discusses their love for television, not an English thesis...
That's pretty much what I do. If I go back in the thread later and I read a mistake that I made, then I'll edit it sometimes. If not, oh well. lol

I agree with you there. I couldn't care less about whether or not people have good grammar on these boards or not. For me though, because of my extreme Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, it's nearly impossible for me to post without first proofreading. I'd just feel incredibly weird if I didn't proofread. It's just one of my many many obsessions.

Thanks Janice. :D It's nice to have that time window to double check and correct errors. :)
Tweety 07-17-2011, 09:42 PM I usually try to proff my posts, especially since many of them are lenghty.
catlover79 07-17-2011, 11:22 PM I proofread mine all the time because I'm anal.

Me too, Monika! I'm that way at work too! I'll be entering information for a client's trip and I've even looked up words in the dictionary if I'm afraid I've spelled them wrong! I try to proofread everything-even on Facebook and Twitter!

I've been known to delete a tweet or FB comment b/c of ONE misspelled word. And I've edited chapters of fanfiction over small typos that no one noticed but me! I guess you could say I'm a perfectionist when it comes to writing/language. It sort of comes w/ the territory if you're an English major! ;)

You know what you could do instead? Do like I do, and copy and paste your message before deleting it. Then press Ctrl V, and then make the change to your misspelled word. This way you won't have to permanantely delete it. :)

That's one thing that I like most about your posts. The fact that they're long, and extremely informative, leaving people with no questions as to what you were talking about. Too many people, including myself at times, post long ass messages, with very little substance behind them. Those peeps just love to hear themselves talk, but that's not you. Your posts are always extremely informative from beginning to end. I always learn something new reading your posts. Nobody can ever accuse you of not posting enough facts, that's for sure. (Reference to my Seperation of Church and State thread on the politics board. ;) lol) I'm not saying you do, but if you ever feel like people aren't paying attention to your posts, just know that I read every one of them. Truth is, I think just about everybody reads your threads and posts though. And I'm sure they learn alot from them, just like I do.
Kristen 07-19-2011, 12:14 AM Brad, I do that before I delete, too. Does make things easier. But I always wonder if people think I'm crazy, deleting something for such a small reason. I know if I don't, it'll bug me! LOL
Sometimes I do & sometimes I don't, it depends on how rushed I am. ;)

lol! I know what you mean. I sometimes wonder what others think when I do that too. In reality though, I really don't care what most people think anymore. I'm not going to spend the rest of my life going out of my way trying to please others. Did that with the first 30 years of my life. I'll be dammed if I'm going to live the second half of my life that way. My mom was singing outside very loudly last night. Her boyfriend called me up to try to get her to stop. I just told him to leave her alone. If she wants to sing at the top of her lungs, then more power to her. If it makes her happy then it makes me happy. Who cares what the neighbors think!
OH Nuts! 07-19-2011, 07:26 PM Not as well as I should, because I sometimes find annoying/embarrassing typos in them when I re-view them down the road. Some people have a gift for proofreading; sadly I'm not one of them.

Tweety 07-19-2011, 11:26 PM What's bad is when you make an obvious typo, and then your post is quoted by someone... even though you can edit your own posts and fix whatever it is you messed up, your typo is still in the other poster's quote of your original post.
LUNCH 07-22-2011, 04:08 PM I very quickly proofread my posts, but that's about it.I do not use things like spellcheck or any other similair type of things to help.I also try to keep posts as short and simple as possible so they are very easy for other folks to read.
