The day before yesterday, I walked up to Albertsons to do a little shopping. One thing I wanted to get was a 12 pack of Coke. When I got to the coke, I was shocked to see how much it had gone up. They were five freaking dollars. I remember back when I'd get a 12 pack of coke for only 2 dollars plus deposit. And that was only about 2 years ago. Now you can't even buy the generic crap for that cheap. Also, at Albertsons they use to have amazing offers on two liters of named brand soda. I remember going shopping with my Opa, and my brother, and getting a two liter for only 50 cents. Now they are darn near 2 dollars. It's no wonder so many American's are suffering so badly financially. Because the prices have gotten totally out of control.

In 1970 I could get a gallon of gas for .35 cents, A pack of smokes for .50 cents, I could order a hamburger, fries and a shake at mcdonalds, give them a dollar bill and get change back. I discovered this place called The Retro Candy Shop in my neighborhood, so I went in and saw all the old candy I remembered as a kid. They had bubsdaddy, turkish taffy, now n laters, red hot dollars and everything, but not at retro prices. I bought a pack of blackjack gum and the lady said " i bet you remember that gum ? " I Told her Yes, but not at 1.50 a pack.

Every single bill in my life has gone up. My food bill, by at least 25%, my electric bill, cable, heating, gas for car, everything. Yet, for the last two years, there's been no cost of living increase for Social Security checks. First time that's happened since 1975. I get SSI and my husband gets a regular SS check. If those checks got the increases they should have, it would help offset these rising bills. The craziest part is when Social Security sent us letters explaining why there would be no increases, it stated it was because the cost of living has gone down. Man, they think we're stupid.

I agree. The price of things have gone up while the quality and/or size of things such as food has gone down.

My mother, sister and I noticed a few weeks when we went to Luby's (which had been awile since we had been) that the quality of the food had gone way down and some of the food was cold. The last few times we've gone there over the last year or so it's gone downhill. We don't plan to go back.

In the 1950s that cheap paycheck got you alot more than 2 'expensive' paychecks do now.this was true up till the late 70s.

I remember as a kid in the early '70s getting a candy bar with a small bottle of pop for no more than 35 cents total. In 1970, a comic book or a pack of baseball cards would set you back 15 cents.

When Bazooka gum went up in price from 1 cent to 2 per piece, it was cause for concern...!

On a similar note I can relate to this...

It happened maybe 7 or 8 years ago when the 5 piece of gum pack (Winter Fresh, DoubleMint) went up from $0.25 to $0.35

I used to go to the corner store and just literally throw a quarter at the cashier who would catch it, but this time he was like "Hold on, hold on... 35 cents now!!"

I was like 'huh', and I looked at the pack and it now said $0.35. I remember saying this was crazy and now I needed change from $0.50

It is sad how we oldsters can remember when. As a kid in the 1960's I could get just about any candy bar for a nickel. I do remember sky bars were a dime. Life savers a nickel. Now I glance at the check out area of supermarket and I see 60 cents. You look at the average supermarket today and it is stocked with 5 times the stock of the early 1970's. So much more to choose from and so little that is really good. Sad.

When I did have the 5 cent candy bars days I had more fun than than I do now. I walked to school, finding chestnuts along the way. The kids now take busses and the schools have vending machines with terrible snacks. Many times I didn't have the 5 cents to buy the candy. Now some children use the snacks for lunch.

About the only time I had money for candy as a kid was when I was lucky enough to find a couple of empty soda bottles in a creek. I would bring them into the store, still filled with mud, collect my 6 cents and spend 20 minutes trying to figure out what I wanted to buy. The store owner would get nervous waiting for me to make up my mind and probably said to himself,
" Hurry up and steal something and get out "

i agree. About a month or so ago, (i kid you not, they were selling halloween candy a month ago) i came across some bags of candy that were going for $12.99. i don't know about ya'll, but in my neighborhood you are lucky to get 10 trick or treaters. i usually end up giving handfuls away to each kid just to get rid of the crap so that i don't gain 10 pounds before Christmas. lol

They were pretty big bags, but a few years ago these same bags probably went for $5.99, $6.99 tops. It's absurd. Unless you live in an affluent neighborhood that's pretty safe, you probably won't be needing that much. Otherwise you will be gaining 10 pounds right along with me.

My area doesn't get many trick or treaters to buying candy isn't on my shopping list. Decades ages kids would come in droves. Not many kids in the area anymore. More middle agers or elders with no kids. As for prices of food, american throw out a lot. Read somewhere we through out 40% of our food. I don't study the expiration dates on food. If it looks, tastes and smells fine, I eat it. My garbage bag would weigh a ton if I threw out food.

It seems that us hard working people.... all we do is get bled dry of our hard earned money anymore. I remember a few years ago an uncle of mine was in the hospital for 2 weeks and the bill came to $10,000.00! The insurance covered $8,000.00, so he owed the hospital $2,000.00. I have noticed in the stores too those fun sized packets of candy bars.... you used to get 10 in a pack now only 8 and the prices even went up! Burger King and McDonald's food..... RIP OFF! They charge like 7 or 8 bucks for a value meal now. I dont even eat at these places anymore. If I do eat out, I eat out at a privately owned restaurant where I can get a bigger meal sometimes for a less price. Someday though, these high prices have got to go down.

Since prices continue to get more and more ridiculous with each passing day, I thought I'd resurrect this thread. I might resurrect the surprisingly low prices thread too, so that hopefully it will help others find good deals. The other day I was at Albertsons wanting to buy some Carl Buddig lunch meat. We use to buy these for sandwiches for lunch for school as a kid for 30 cents a pack. I was shocked when I saw the current price of $1.09!!! I couldn't believe it. Please share all the insanely high prices you come across. Thanks!

Yeah, I do alot of that these days. Went shopping with my ex awhile back, and she saved 60% through coupons and other methods. I call her the coupon queen. It's time consuming, but at the end of the month when you have a cupboard full of food, I don't think you'll regret those extra two hours or so clipping coupons.

^^^ That's smart. There's this supermarket by me that offers a 10% discount for senior citizens on Wednesdays, so I bring my dad food shopping with me for the discount. He just acts like all the stuff is his. That combined with the coupons and the stuff on sale helps a lot. Me and my dad call it the senior-shim-sham...lol.... I know another lady who does the same thing with her senior citizen dad.

Brad Russ

One issue that I have with coupons is that it's usually very selective, and 80% of the stuff that requires coupons, is stuff I'd never buy. We have a store here in Oregon called Winco it use to be called Cub Foods where the prices are typically much cheaper. This is where I do most of my shopping. I like Cheeto Puffs, and they go for about $3.59 at other stores. The last time I was at Winco, the same sized bag was going for $1.98. Amazing difference. A 12 pack of Coke there goes for $3.49, while at other stores it's usually a ridiculous $5.99. There aren't too many Winco's, but I'm lucky to have three of them within twenty minutes from where I'm staying. If you are ever in Oregon and need to do same shopping, I highly recommend looking them up.

Those are insane prices for soda! I can be a real cheapo sometimes, so I get the store brand diet root beer or ginger ale for only $2.75. And when they are on sale, they are only about two bucks. But since you like Coke, you may not like store brand soda. I almost never buy diet coke because it's always over priced. Only if I have that coupon!

Brad Russ
03-21-2012, 11:17 PM
I know, it's crazy what they charge for soda these days. I mentioned earlier in the thread, how just three years ago a 12 pack of Coke routinely went for $2.50. I typically buy generic soda as well. Even that is expensive these days, but nowhere near what you pay for coke. The generic stuff usually tastes just as good as coke imo, but it does lose it's fizz alot quicker, so you have to drink it faster. Since so many people are soda addicts though, stores know that they can pretty much charge anything, and soda addicts will still buy it.

I took this photo a few months ago of a bag of candy at Rite Aid. I told a couple friends about the price of candy, and they didn't believe me, so I took this pic to prove it. Two years ago this same bag of candy costed $5.99. I don't care how much of a chocolate craving I have, I would never pay $10.99 for this. Two months earlier at Halloween this same bag was going for $12.99, I kid not. Insanity I tell you, insanity! lol

-STEFFY-
03-21-2012, 11:25 PM
^^^ Wow! $10.99 for those dinky little bags of candy is so ridiculous.

Some coffee is also super expensive. I like the New England Coffee brand, but it can be expensive, so I only get it when it's on sale. Starbucks coffee is insanely priced, but I would never get it sale or not because I think it tastes really nasty.

I've never had the generic coke, but I don't mind the generic root beer, lemon-lime or ginger ale. The grape is also pretty good. Sometimes when bills are really high I'll have to get the generic coffee.

I've seen the generic cat food in the stores and it looks so pitiful. I have two cats and I would never subject them to that nasty stuff. I usually get them Friskies or Fancy Feast.

Walgreens had a sale last week on Coke 12 pack cans. They were 6 for $20 but you received a coupon good for $10 off your next purchase. I took that $10 and got 3 more cartons of drinks so my total for 9 cartons was just over $21.

Aldi is another place I like to shop, some of my favorite products are their Clancy's brand snacks. These are just as good if not better than the national brands and the prices are much cheaper. For example:

Clancy's microwave popcorn is $1.49 for a box of six bags and Orville Redenbacher is $5.49 if not on sale.

Clancy's tortilla chips are $1.19 a bag and the same size bag of Tostitos is $3.99 if not on sale.

Clancy's also has a 20 bag variety pack similar to Frito-Lay but their's is only $3.99 compared to $7.99 or higher for the other.

I hit Aldi about twice per month. They have good fruits and veggies and they usually go pretty low on selected ones to get people into the store.

I bought some of their 11 ounce bags of potato chips today ("Clancys") at 50 cents per bag (closeout).

Don't forget to check dollar stores occasionally. Recently I bought some 2-lb packs of uncooked spaghetti (32 oz. each) at a Dollar Tree, just $1.
