We all know Linden was the star of this sitcom, but if you had to choose another detective from the ole 1-2, who would it be and why?

Ha ha Monika! I immediately thought of you when I saw this thread! I knew you were going to mention Gregory Sierra! :) BTW, I'm glad you posted the picture of his 'intro' because my husband was asking me who Gregory played and I couldn't tell him!

Did your hubby recognize him? :D

Did your hubby recognize him? :D I don't think so. If he did, he didn't say much about it. My dad and I used to watch Barney Miller all the time but I don't know if Curt's ever watched it much.

Personally, I'd say that Abe Vigoda was the 2nd lead of the show, and that after he left, it was simply an ensemble act with Linden at the top and all the other actors playing detectives on the same level in terms in stardom, right underneath him.

Lugar and Levitt (Gregory and Carey) followed, on the "third tier". :)

1st to the 3rd season of Barney Miller: Hal Linden & Abe Vigoda

4th to the 8th season: Hal Linden & Max Gail
What about Ron Glass?

After Abe Vigoda left, it would be hard to choose.

But if I really had to, I'd think the 2nd in command would be Max Gail.

With everyone else a close 3rd!! LOL

Didn't Barney place Harris in charge of the 12th precinct when he went to jail?

I was thinking that too about Fish being the second star, although I don't agree with the phrase "simply an ensemble." They were an ensemble in the best sense of the word. Everyone played off brilliantly off with one another. Personally I think the show got ever better when Fish left. Although if I have to pick I pick Dietrich. ;)

I meant no asperion by that phrase, and I agree with your assessment of the quality of the show, sara.

After Abe Vigoda left I don't think there was one, although Jack Soo was definitely up there until he passed.

I remember as a kid that when Steve Landesberg Joined as Dietrich he was extremely popular and probably the most associated character with the show next to Barney.

He got the most laughs.

He certainly seems to be almost everyone's favorite. After Hal Linden, Steve Landesberg got the most Emmy nominations of the cast (three).
