I would get so annoyed when Cliff wanted his daughters to only date men with a nice salary or in the medical profession. How the hell can a woman help who she falls in love with? And when Vanessa was engaged to Dabnis the Grandparents were drilling him about his PROFESSION to determine whether he was good enough to date Vanessa.

So basically this show gave off the vibe that the average working person should not be trying to get married.

Yeah, I noticed that too. I found it very annoying, but Cosby was all about sending the message of education. Which isn't necessarily a bad thing, but came off a bit elitist.

The Huxtables were snobs. That's the one part of the show that I hated. You can send messages without hitting people over the head with it. That's why I think ADW was a much better show overall.

Just like the ep when the grandparents only accepted Dabins as a husband for Vanessa when they found out he was the HEAD of maintenance

I think I get your feelings towards the character of Cliff being concerned about the potential husbands of his daughters. The addition of the character of Dabnis, however, kind of addressed this exact issue. If The Cosby Show was prejudiced of "the working class", then they would have never gone this direction with Vanessa & Dabnis' storyline. And Cliff ended up liking him in the end anyway.

Dabnis was only accepted because of his job

Well, to be fair though, Cliff isn't the only dad to prefer their kids try to marry someone who is as well off as possible. Even white dads feel the same way. Anyone remember how Steven Keaton felt about daughter Mallory's boyfriend, Nick?

Thank you! I am surprised to see all the negative comments about the show. I enjoyed the storylines and did not mind that most of the boyfriends were successful. Cliff did wind up liking him (Dabnis) in the end. I have nothing but good things to say about the show.

Cliff wasn't very happy when daughter Sondra and her husband Elvin, a law student and medical student respectively, were going to drop out of school and open up a camping wilderness store. At first he blamed Elvin for his bad influence on his daughter. Again, he wanted his children to be only the best.

Bill Cosby, himself wanted only the best for his TV kids, as if they were his own. Four of them, Tempest Bledsoe, Sabrina Labeauf, Malcolm-Jamal Warner and Keisha Knight Pulliam, went on to (or back to) college to further their education, at the encouragement of Bill. And he was so proud of all of them.

Women normally can't control who they fall in love with so to look down on a guy because he wasn;t a doctor or lawyer was just foolish.

I Agree with you on this one, I don't see anything wrong with promoting education, especially on an African American show. I do not see anything wrong with wanting the best for your children in their personal life and education wise.

On the Dabnis story line, Cliff and Claire liked Dabnis. I believe they did not like how Vanessa went about things by hiding her engagement, and the fact that she had been dating Dabnis.

Nothing wrong with promoting higher education but to be picky because someone doesn't have a good job is snobbish. I don't make a 6 figure salary so does that mean I should never be in a long term relationship?

When were they snobbish?

I think you may be missing some of the other points involved. Vanessa was still in college and there was a decade+ year difference between Vanessa and Dabnis. Couple that with a secret engagement, most parents would be a bit concerned.

After Cliff got to know Dabnis--specifically, that he owned his own house and would not be moving back home like everyone else in the family--Cliff liked him.

When they were concerned about the occupation of their daughters husbands or boyfriend

I remember a girl's father asking me right after I graduated college what I did for a living. I had only beenout of college 4 months-lol No one had never asked me that before

What about getting mad at Elvin for not wanting to be a doctor? And on top of it it wasn't like he wanted to be a cashier at Mcdonalds. He wanted to open up his own business so why not support him?

I believe they were upset because they had paid for Sandra's education and she just decides to open up a wilderness store on a whim. Young, just married, broke and she wanted to open up a wilderness store? I would be extremely PO'ed if my daughter came to me and told me that her and her husband wants to open up a Wilderness store, after my husband and I have spent over $60 or $70 thousand dollars on her education.

I said Elvin not Sandra. They had a right to be mad at Sondra because she was their daughter but no right to be mad at what Elvin wanted to do with his life. He wanted to open up his own business and see if he could be a success at it. Who was Clair and Cliff to get mad at what he chose to do with his life after college?

I think that they were more upset with Sandra than with Elvin. Also this is the guy who married their daughter. They ended up struggling living in a one room apartment that wasn't safe and Sandra was pregnant with twins. Who's parents would be happy with that situation? This is the man who you are trusting to care for your daughter? I think that they were looking at the fact that they were young, just married, broke and they were wasting an expensive education.

If one day you get married, have and raise your children, one who's a girl. She goes off to a prestigious college to become a Lawyer, you pay for her tuition. Let's say that her tuition is $26,000 a year (which is cheap), PLUS you are also paying for her books and room and board that's an extra $10,000 a year. You are paying $36,000 PLUS TAX for 4 years. She graduates, right after she graduate, she gets married to a guy you kinda like, you know that he has potential. Not even a year after her graduation and wedding, Your daughter comes to you one day and say "Dad, Steve and I are going to open up a Wilderness store." How would you react and or feel?

I did not ask you what you would tell her to do. I asked you, how would you feel? You're feelings are relevant. That is your daughter, no matter how old she gets, she is still your child. How would you feel?

Also Cliff and Claire never told Sandra "not to" or that she "couldn't" do anything.

Indeed, the guy who wrote that episode, Gary Kott, should have been dragged out into the streets and shot to death.
