I find that Sci-Fi can be split into two categories; light or dark.
Light Sci-Fi is a show that although serious, the characters can be light-hearted at times and the episodes usually endon a happy note with everything being alright in the universe. The sets are usually also bright and clean. Examples of this would be Star Trek:TOS, Star Trek:TNG, Stargate SG-1, Stargate Atlantis, Warehouse 13, etc.
Dark Sci-Fi is a show that plays in the shadows with the sets always dark. The characters are always grim and never smile and the episodes usually end on a desperate or just plain depressing note. Cases of this would be the new Battlestar Galactica, Stargate Universe, Star Trek:DS9 Bablyon 5.
For me, I am a Gene Roddenberry follower. Roddenberry believed that the future should look more hopeful and better than the present. For me I love light Sci-Fi for this reason. I got to hope that the future will be better than the present and watch TV to be entertained and escape the dark sometimes depressing world.
But how does everyone else feel? Do you like light or dark Sci-Fi? or both?
