I am not sure how popular the Gordy Howard character was on The Mary Tyler Moore Show, but I was curious if you think a show centered around him after leaving Minneapolis would've worked better than say Phyllis did. Especially considering how abrasive Phyllis was.

I don't know.....spin offs don't usually work out very well with the exception of Maude and Good Times. I wonder if tv viewers would relate to John Amos more as James Evans than as Gordy if there was a Gordy spinoff. Two very different personalities. Interesting question though....

If I am not mistaken, didn't Amos leave to star in "Roots?"

Nope, Amos was fired over comments he made in Ebony magazine about the show's quality. What really pisses me off is that the producers responsible for his dismissal, Austin and Irma Kalish, practically escaped karma.
