Honestly, I don't think they ever did a good job of giving Tommy a real character. He was just kind of "loyal and good and supportive son" for nine seasons. McKeon gets props for making him somewhat believable, probably because the actor is a likeable fellow himself, but the character was always kind of flat to me.
