About a month ago, my mother and I were going to Starbuck's for our favorite drink, two venti peppermint mocha cappuccinos. There was a truck in front of us, and two cars behind. We sat there for 10 or 15 minutes, because the person in front of us had a large order, ordering six cups of coffee. When he finally pulled away, we got up to the window, and I pulled out my money. When I did the lady said no no no, The person in front of you payed for both your drinks, as well as for the two cars behind you since he took so long. I was so touched I almost cried, because just a little bit earlier I had been talking about all the bad in the world. It made my day, and it made my mom's too. Please tell your story of random acts of kindness. I love that stuff.

Brad, your thread reminds me of one I made way back in 2003 (below). I remember it like it was yesterday. It's cool seeing some former members post. The thread kind of saddens me because it was a month before my sister passed away. I love doing random acts of kindness. I get a lot of pleasure from giving to people, even if it's just a card to put a smile on someone's face.

My husband helps a few of the older neighbors who live in our condo complex. He's very handy. He'll fix faucets, put in their air conditioners, all sorts of things. He takes the trash out for one lady every Friday. She lives alone, so it's only a couple of bags. We also give her pizza when we get it. On Mondays, they have a 'buy one, get one free' deal, so we give her half a pizza.

I was a bartender off and on through the years, and I saw many people buy complete strangers drinks or even their meal, just because they struck up a conversation. Many of the regular patrons were nice to me, especially around the holidays. One guy who became a friend, had a bouquet of balloons delivered to the bar on my birthday. The bar was in a restaurant. There's a lot of kindness in the world.

I've run the gamut from having my feelings hurt to having my heart broken. The closer I've been to the person, the more it hurt when I was taken for granted, used or any variation of ingratitude. I'll never understand.

I just read the first post in that thread from 2003. At that point I had not even come across Chit Chat. What you did for that elderly woman was very nice Janice. :) I think more people should do things like you have Janice. I know you have done a lot for so many people. Thanks for being someone I know I can count on. You have done so much, thank you. :)

Also, I have had a few friends that were and are teachers who have done nice things for me. :)

I try to help people if I can. I know if I'm in a store and I think I'm going to slow someone down by being behind me in line and they only have a few things I let them go ahead of me. I usually try to step aside when I'm given change back, or try to rush, so that I don't slow the line down. .

Janice, you are one of the most giving people I've ever known. And you're the good kind of giver to, giving without wanting, or expecting anything in return. Believe it or not, I do remember that thread that you spoke of after all these years. Some threads just stand out, and yours was one of them. I try to do my part to give as well. Like you, I enjoy it very much. I hate to admit this, but you know what, I'm trying hard to be genuine, and live my life as honest as I can, even if it makes me look bad, I'm not going to deny the truth, and the truth is, there was a time that I gave, with the hopes of having someone give back in return. Over the last few years though, that has totally changed. I give, and feel great joy doing it, and I don't expect, or want for that matter, anything in return. People like us are rare you know, but as you stated, there truly are some amazing people out there. Even if they are hard to find at times. When I go to Starbucks, or restaurants, I tip very well. Even though I expect nothing in return, Iv'e noticed that the waitresses are always extra good to me as a result. If I go out with female friends, I always pay for everything. Another thing I do to give back, is everytime my mom and I go somewhere, and I want to buy something, I tell her that she can buy whatever she wants as well. It's the least I can do for her for her driving me all over the place. Last week I bought Chinese food, and it was way too much. I had a few bites, and was full. It was about 15 bucks worth of food, and I gave it all to them. Another thing I enjoy doing, is you know how at convenience stores they always have that change thing on the counter which is always filled with pennies? Well, I put all of my metal change in their, including quarters. I know how it feels to be 20 cents short of buying something, and so my hope is that someone who doesn't have enough money, will be able to look into that thing, and find quarters that I put in their, and as a result, be able to buy what they want. I'm extremely generous in regards to money. Over the last several months I have pretty much given away 80% of my monthly check to friends and family, who needed it. My mom owed me over a thousand dollars which she had borrowed from me over the span of a few months. A couple weeks ago, I told her not to worry about it, and that she didn't have to pay me back. She has enough financial woes to deal with, and I don't want to add to it. Those are a few of the ways I like to give back. Thanks to you for sharing the ways you like to give back too. :)

You're absolutely right Janice, and I couldn't agree with you more. Jim is one awesome, and genuine guy. I'm proud to call him friend. I enjoy his posts so much, because they are so creative, and original, and they're not like anything Iv'e ever seen here on SO before. He obviously puts alot of time, and effort into them, and you can tell that he has no motives, other than wanting to put a smile on a persons face, and make that persons day. He's certainly made me feel that way several times now. Jim, I know you're a humble guy and all, but come on man, you have to face the facts, you are one straight up awesome human being! ;)
