Raleigh, N.C. — The driver killed in a bus wreck on Interstate 40 in Raleigh Monday is former Wolfpack basketball standout Lorenzo Charles, WRAL News has learned.

No other vehicles were involved in wreck and no passengers were believed to be on the bus at the time, said Raleigh police spokesman Jim Sughrue.

The bus belongs to Elite Coach, a limo, charter bus and car service based in Apex. A spokesman for the company said the bus was headed to Durham to pick up passengers and that the driver had no known medical conditions.

The wreck closed two lanes of westbound Interstate 40 and the entrance ramp to the interstate from Chapel Hill Road.

Motorists were advised to avoid the area. Traffic was being detoured onto exit 290.

No other vehicles were involved in the wreck.

Oh man. I was living up in NC during the time that the Wolfpack won the National Championship in 1983. Everyone was so excited for the team back then. Lorenzo Charles was a very good player. So sad. R.I.P. Lorenzo. You left us far too soon. :(

Sad news.

I remember watching that game (83 NCAA finals)... after Charles made the dunk, I think a whole lot of people (including myself) were in a state of shock and didn't realize until a few seconds later that the game was over and NC State had just won a national championship.

It seemed to me that Billy Packer was also stunned. After the dunk, there was 3 or 4 seconds of silence (from the broadcast booth) and then all of a sudden Packer yells out "They WON it!! (pause) on the dunk!!"

Although he only got in about 1/2 of a season in the NBA (36 games with the Hawks in 85-86), Charles did play professionally over in Europe.
