View Full Version : David Hyde Pierce is a phenomenal actor-this scene proves it.
andress_jade 06-25-2011, 12:49 AM In the episode The Maris Counselor, Niles breaks down crying over losing Maris and it was just so heartbreaking and real. David Hyde Pierce just nailed that scene, it was amazing. He had me crying right along with him. He is a phenomenal actor. The scene starts at 17:04.

Schmoopie 06-25-2011, 01:05 AM Thanks so much for posting this! I just love DHP. He's absolutely brilliant, but I won't go on and on about something we both already know! Niles has moved me to tears several times and this is one of my favorite scenes. This is one reason I love "Frasier" so much. It's hilarious at times, but also moving, tender and sweet. That's a great mix in a sitcom, IMO. I've wanted to hug Niles from the first moment I saw him!!

Same here. I just got done watching the episode on WE TV and I was just blown away! The show was amazing and the actors were spectacular. :)
Schmoopie 07-05-2011, 02:20 AM I never get tired of seeing this episode! Or any of DHP's episodes for that matter! The ending of that episode makes me want to hug Frasier, Niles AND Martin! :(
Kristen 07-05-2011, 02:58 AM I still think the best Niles scene is the beginning of "Three Valentines." There's almost NO dialogue, it's all just physical comedy. And he does it brilliantly. I have no clue how he did it all w/ a straight face. And Kelsey had to direct, which had to be a challenge, too!

That IS brilliant! Just like a Charlie Chaplin movie or something!!!
Kristen 07-05-2011, 03:37 AM I'd absolutely KILL to see outtakes from that! Same goes for "Ham Radio"! I can't imagine how either of those was ever done well enough to be used. The whole cast is really amazing, when you get down to it!

What I think is hilarious is how one of them will say something funny (that's in the script) and Martin or someone will start laughing. It always makes me wonder if they were really supposed to be laughing in the first place!
Oh, what about the outtakes from Roz and the Schnoz? They were laughing so much DURING the 'finished' episode that I can't imagine what they must have done during takes!
Kristen 07-05-2011, 03:54 AM Oh, yes, "Roz and the Schnoz" is great, too! And I love the Daphne storyline, too. Esp. when she hugs and kisses Niles for finding her earrings. (Gee, I wonder whose influence that is, making me melt over the slightest N/D interaction?)

You know I agree with you about "Three Valentines..." And how can you forget the fencing scene in "An Affair to Forget??" DHP is awesome, amazing, brilliant...everything! :D

And not to mention completely adorable! :eyes: Sorry, I just had to mention that!

I just watched that episode last night and I was rolling with laughter. I can only imagine what the cast went through when they were taping. I bet they had a hard time keeping a straight face and finishing taping. It was hilarious! The Niles and Daphne interaction was cute and funny! :D

Of course, that too. :D :loveya:

You wouldn't mean me by any chance, would you?
And by the way.... You're :welcome:!!!
I definitely have to watch that episode again. I had completely forgotten about that part (until I read an awesome fan fic based on it! ;) )
But I'll watch it after I finish about 8 more episodes! ;)
Schmoopie 05-10-2012, 05:33 AM I watched this episode again last night after not having seen it in a while and I'm even more impressed with how wonderfully DHP portrayed Niles, not just in that one scene but in that entire episode. I was seriously near tears at more than point; that scene in the bedroom and then the counseling session and of course at Frasier's condo. Just a beautifully acted episode!

I watched that on Hallmark last night too. And I think Roz and the Schnoz is on tonight.
There are so many moments throughout the whole series that make me sit in awe of David Hyde Pierce. That episode is definitely one that is full of those moments... plus I love the Niles character in that episode too. He's falling in love with Daphne, and he knows it and is dismayed about the fact that he can't help it, but he's married to Maris and he understands commitment and wants to try to make it work with her right to the bitter end. Once he realizes it's not possible, he mourns the death of that commitment and relationship, even though she cheated on him. I mean, really, that's a good man. Maris was stupid for letting him go, but I'm glad she did because it released him to be able to go on to the real love of his life and the kind of relationship he really deserved.
And not to mention completely adorable! Sorry, I just had to mention that!

Me either. I can't think of a single moment, not one single moment, that he's on the screen in that show and I'm not swooning over him. I just want to take his face in my hands and kiss it all over, he's so sweet. And I think it's the combination of the actor and the character, not just one or the other. And it's not even necessarily his looks (although I do think he's handsome) or physicality, really, it's just that somehow that character was so perfectly cast that they meld into one in such a real, believable way that you just can't help but love him. It's like he feels so beautifully, imperfectly real that it helps you remember that there are men out there who really are like that. Plain and simple, Niles just makes me happy. :)

He said in an article I posted on my DHP group on FB (hey, he totally deserved one! :) ) that he finds syndication kind of depressing because he's so much older now. I found that statement so sad, I just wanted to hug him! :( Oh wait.... Anyway, that's probably not very accurate as to what he actually said but it was something like that. I still think he's handsome, even if he doesn't have his blonde hair and he's not as young. Heck, none of us are! I think he's adorable! But I do love the way you describe him! :)
I am seriously dying to hug him and I know that everyone says that but I literally dream about the man almost every night and I am always thinking about him (either as himself or as Niles) which is probably why I've written SOOOO many Frasier fan fictions! I probably shouldn't mention dreaming about him almost every night but it's the truth! I'm surprised that I wasn't more of a basket case when I went to see "Shoulda Been You" thinking I would see him there! Maybe it was because I kinda figured he wouldn't be there but I was hoping... Now if I had known before hand, I might have been on the verge of hyperventilating! Hmmm... Wonder if he could have helped with that since he did have to act that out so much as Niles!
Sinnce February I have written 78 Frasier fan fics and tonight I'm going to post my 79th (which is a story that Kristen and I wrote together!)! I am SO glad that I told DHP in my letter to him that Niles is one of the few characters who has made me laugh and cry in the same episode, because it's SO true!
I think the only other person who has done that is Tony Shalhoub as Adrian Monk, but in a different way. I like that character but I wouldn't call him adorable. And I do love that show!
Anyway, just had to comment on what you said! Thanks again! Your insight on Niles/Daphne/Frasier and DHP never fails to amaze me or make me smile!:)
