James "Whitey" Bulger's capture came the same week the FBI launched an aggressive new pursuit of the 81-year-old fugitive and legendary Boston crime boss.
The campaign focused on finding Bulger's longtime girlfriend, Catherine Greig, and included television commercials in 14 major cities where there had been reported sightings of the couple.
The push marked the latest in numerous efforts by authorities to track Bulger since he went on the run more than a decade ago.
FBI officials said the public service announcements were directed at women who might recognize Greig, 60. They also doubled the reward being offered for her capture from $50,000 to $100,000.
In 2008, the FBI doubled the reward offered for Bulger's capture from $1 million to $2 million. At the time a video announcement of the increased reward called him "a predator in every sense of the word."
Late Wednesday all images of Bulger on his "Most Wanted" poster were marked "captured" on the FBI's website.
Bulger, the FBI wrote, was sought for "his role in numerous murders committed from the early 1970s through the mid-1980s in connection with his leadership of an organized crime group that allegedly controlled extortion, drug deals, and other illegal activities in the Boston, Massachusetts, area."
The FBI also cautioned that Bulger "has a violent temper and is known to carry a knife at all times."
And its already been updated on fbi.gov

Jediknight1823 06-23-2011, 02:19 AM First Osama now Whitey Bulger, damn it's been a nice year for American intelligence and law enforcement.
Steve W. 06-23-2011, 08:01 AM I'm not familiar with this one: so does this mean there's another solved UM case now?

Yes, because it was featured on UM. The UM segment originally aired on November 22, 1996.
TheCars1986 06-23-2011, 08:31 AM 2011 seems to be the year of solving "unsolvable" UM segments. Glad to see this POS apprehended finally.
Hambone2421 06-23-2011, 09:05 AM Yes, nice to see him captured.
RobinW 06-23-2011, 09:11 AM Even though he was featured on UM, Whitey Bulger has such an extensive criminal history that he didn't need UM to garner tons of notoreity. Anyway, it's great that he was captured before he passed away in order to provide his victims with closure. If he had died while still on the run, who knows if his body would have been found and properly IDed and his fate may have remained unsolved forever. Given the large number of captured of UM fugitives lately, I can't help but think that Robert Stack is looking down upon us and driving home the message that no matter how old you are and how long you've been on the run, you will NOT get away with your crimes!
We should almost do an UM pool about which mystery is going to be solved next...
This one was a long time coming, seemed like he was on the run forever. He had a heck of a run and was free until the age of 81.
DarkDante 06-23-2011, 11:10 AM Yes, because it was featured on UM. The UM segment originally aired on November 22, 1996.
Also even though his name wasn't mentioned in the segment, it was later revealed that Bulger's associates were responsible for the murders of Roger Wheeler Sr., Brian Halloran and John Callahan all profiled during the first UM Special on January 20, 1987.

Excellent idea. Let's start a new thread for this!
JRA2000TL 06-23-2011, 11:49 AM This is awesome! I always wondered if they'd ever find him. I just saw this myself and logged in here to see if anyone else had found out. I figured this guy would have been dead by now...guess not.
crystaldawn 06-23-2011, 12:54 PM Great news! Not only was he featured on UM he was also thought to be involved in ordering the hit on one of the very first segments ever to air on UM...Roger Wheeler.

I guess you beat me to it Dark Dante...lol.
Janice 06-23-2011, 03:26 PM Great news! I'm listening now to Howie Carr, New England's radio guy who I think has been chasing Whitey as much as the FBI. Joking of course, but his books on Whitey and Boston's mafia in general were great. It's a great day for Howie, but more of course, for the families of Whitey's many victims. He was one vicious killer.
Apostapler 06-23-2011, 07:48 PM Wow! What a great year for solving cases.
bugnpinky 06-23-2011, 09:01 PM I'm not shocked, but I am surprised. I figured he would die on the lam. IIRC, he served time in Alcatraz and Leavenworth, did he not?
mdl1981 06-23-2011, 10:58 PM Maybe Brad Bishop will be next! We can all hope....
Blackout 06-23-2011, 11:06 PM bishop should be the #1 most wanted man
biscuitgirl 06-24-2011, 09:51 AM bishop should be the #1 most wanted man
No joke!
I'm glad Bulger was finally captured. I had always wondered if he ever would be. I had no idea that Whitey inspired Jack Nicholson's character in "The Departed"!

Apparently, when "The Departed" was playing in theaters, there was an unconfirmed sighting of Whitey Bulger leaving a screening of the film in San Diego! Matt Damon's undercover mole character in the film is also based on John Connolly, the FBI agent who was tipping off Bulger and allowed to evade arrest for years.
SimmonV 06-28-2011, 03:40 AM Did you know that the notorious fugitive named James Bulger was now arrested by the Federal Bureau of Investigation. After long years of hiding, he was now put to jail. In the news, they mentioned that A member of the Federal Bureau of Investigation's Most Wanted List was taken off the list as he was caught. The Federal Bureau of Investigation acted on a tip that led to the arrest of James “Whitey” Bulger, a Boston crime leader who has been evading authorities for over 15 years. I found this here: Notorious fugitive James Bulger arrested by FBI in Santa Monica (http://www.newsytype.com/8147-james-bulger/)
MegtheEgg86 02-11-2014, 02:31 AM Today I found out that 60 Minutes interviewed John Vincent Martorano, who was wanted by the FBI at the time the Roger Wheeler segment aired and was mentioned in the broadcast, as authorities wanted to question him about Roger Wheeler and John Callahan (both of whom he did in fact murder for the Winter Hill Gang. Brian Halloran, the third victim mentioned in the segment, was shot and killed by Whitey Bulger and a still-unidentified second assailant).
Martorano recounts both the Wheeler and Callahan murders briefly. He says corrupt FBI Agent Paul Rico identified Wheeler for him and provided him his tee time the day he was shot at Southern Hills in 1981, and that Agent John Connolly advised Whitey Bulger to arrange for Callahan's murder, saying that if Callahan wasn't silenced they would all "go to jail for the rest of their lives."

drew790 10-30-2018, 01:20 PM Someone killed Whitey Bulger in prison overnight.

The Dutchman 11-01-2018, 08:18 PM Usually I don't feel this way when a fellow human being passes away, but when I heard that Whitey died, and died just like all his victims did (murdered), I felt my mood pick up and that justice was finally served.
What a sham that the FBI enabled his behavior for so long, and then he had 17 years of freedom (1994-2011). But hey, what goes around comes around.
