Thanks.

There have been two sets of scans since May. One in August and one in November. Both scans were clear. :)

December 23rd will mark one year cancer free. December 23, 2013 my brother had open heart surgery to remove the canerous mass in his heart.

Yes, it was scary. My family thought last year would be his last holiday. I think the worst place, other than perhaps the brain, to have cancer is in the heart. To have cancer in his left leg, travel to his right lung and then travel to his heart was very dangerous. He was given massive amounts of chemotherapy Without the amputation of his left leg below the knee in 2011 he wouldn't be alive now.

My brother came in this week for scans (a month early) and it's not good. :(

He had a CT Scan. There is a metastis in his left lung :( The final report isn't in, but that's what we know. My brother will be back in town in a month. The doctor has spoken to the surgeon that operated on him before.

Prayers needed. Thank you.

It's a 8mm metastis in his left lung. It's too small right now to remove, but too big to ignore. In a month my brother will be back for another CT scan, pre-op and surgery.

Thanks. Surgery went well yesterday. I briefly spoke with my brother yesterday. I hope he's doing ok today. When I spoke to him yesterday he still had the nerve block so the pain hadn't hit yet. I'm sure it did at some point. I'm just hoping he's doing ok. He thought he might be discharged today. I don't know if that will happen. Seems too soon after surgery. I haven't heard from him or anyone today for updates.

I'm having kind of a rough time this evening. Trying to stay positive. My brother saw the oncologist today. He will start a 'new' chemotherapy on Monday. The side effects don't sound good, but the side effects for any chemo. aren't pleasant. It's hard when his cancer continues to metastasize in different places in the body.

Since the chemotherapy [for the Osteo-sarcoma] that has been used in the past has not helped, they are going to use a type that is usually used on renial cancer where the cancer goes to strange places once it's outside of the kidney. This type of chemo. is only in pill form. It's very expensive and it's a God send that the insurance (military) covered it. It's $13,000 a month for the chemotherapy medicine. I hope this will work for him.

My brother starts chemotherapy Monday. Taking it everyday for two months.

My brother had scans last Thursday. Results last Friday were not good. :(

There is a dense area in his heart, three areas in his left lung and one area in his right lung. In addition, the new chemo. he is on has damaged his kidneys. If his kidney's don't improve they won't allow him to continue to be on chemo. In 6 to 8 weeks he will have more scans. It's unclear if it is possible or safe to try and remove the dense area in the soft tissue of the heart. This is the second time something has shown up in his heart and second/third time in his lungs. :(

Survivor rate for metastasis sarcoma is 7%.

Please continue to pray and keep my family lifted up.

Terrible news Jenny. Your poor brother needs a miracle, but they do happen. This is such an exciting time in his life. My brother came into town this week. He had scans on Thursday and got results yesterday.

The four areas in his lungs are still the same size, however, the area in the small tissue of the heart is smaller and less dense. My brother will remain on the chemotherapy medicine and will return in two months for scans again. There is a clinical trial they can try if it becomes necessary.

I am thankful that at least one of the five spots is responding to the chemo.

My brother has scans next week. I hope they go ok.

A local article about him:

Germantown Man Named Hero Of Hope
Posted on June 8, 2016

The American Cancer Society’s Mid-South Division recently named Germantown’s Mickey a Hero of Hope. Mickey is one of 11 cancer survivors and caregivers from the Mid-South states of Alabama, Arkansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi and Tennessee to be recognized.

The Heroes of Hope program is in its eighth year. Honorees will serve as spokespeople for the American Cancer Society in their communities. Those selected have triumphed over cancer or cared for loved ones, made significant volunteer contributions to the American Cancer Society, and made an impact in the lives of others.

Mickey, a 20-year Navy veteran, is a 5-year Ewing’s Sarcoma cancer survivor. An avid volunteer, Mickey has participated in Relay For Life as Survivor/Caregiver committee chair, team captain, team member and guest speaker.

“Relay For Life has proven to be an incredibly uplifting, motivating and overall positive experience for me,” said Mickey. “We need to raise awareness of the support system in communities, and we must seize the opportunity to raise much needed funds to further research efforts and programs to support cancer patients and caregivers.”

Heroes of Hope provide a highly visible symbol of personal victory over the disease, plus encourage support and participation in the programs of the Society. The Heroes of Hope represent the courageous struggle of all cancer patients as they deal with the physical and emotional aspects of their experience.

Nationwide, 90 Heroes have been selected and trained as the Society spokespersons, the vast majority of which remain volunteer leaders. Numerous Heroes have been featured in national, division and local videos, publications and campaign promotions.

Latest scans show tumors in the nodules of the lungs and heart to be slightly bigger. The area in the pancreas was also noted. Because it's not always the same radiologist that reads the scans, we aren't 100% certain the tumors are bigger. The oncologist, radiologist and clinical trial team will keep an eye on the scan results. Next set of scans will be sometime in December. We will know more and be able to determine to a better extent if the areas are larger or not.

We had hoped for better news, but we are grateful that, the cancer is more or less stable. It's definitely reached a point now that no one other than my brother has been on this particular chemo. for this long. The doctors do not know the long term effects of being on the chemo. this long. My brother will remain on the chemo. unless it becomes either no longer effective or his body can no longer handle it.

My brother had scans at the end of the year and then on Tuesday.

Scans show no change from the last time. The areas of concern are not bigger, but they are also not smaller. The chemo. port was taken out surgically. That turned out to be much harder than expected. It took 2 & 1/2 hours to remove. There was a lot of scar tissue. Chemo. port in his chest had to be removed because of complications.

Thanks Lee. When I look at pictures prior to my brother's cancer diagnoses and now 6 years later (in June) he looks a lot different. He's very pale and you can just see what the cancer has done. Yes, the Ewing's Sarcoma cancer started in his left leg (which was amputated), then spread to his lungs more than once, to his heart and pancreas. We didn't know if he would survive it when it went to his heart. He's been on very heavy duty chemo. medicine and has to make trips every 3 months to MD Anderson Cancer Center for scans.

Recent scans show no change. The areas are not bigger, but not smaller. My brother has high blood pressure and has been put on high blood pressure medicine. One of the side effects of the prolonged chemo. medication he has been on, is high blood pressure.
