I thought they solved this shortly after the initial UM broadcast of the segment? Doesn't seem like it should be classified as a "cold case".

The episode is from the first season of "Cold Case Files"which aired in 1999. so I'm not sure when the Omar case took place. wasn't it the 80's? or early 90's? I'm too lazy to look it up. I'm not sure why they decided to cover this case on the show tho.

Those two kids in that video deserved an ass kicking.

Oh Hambone! :D I think hardcore jailtime would've sufficed. lol. but honestly these are two people I wouldn't want let back into society. even if they didn't kill anyone. I mean hello... the videotapes and torturing animals is a definate red flag. it's obvious they have serious issues.

Torturing animals? I don't remember anything about them torturing animals; I thought it was a couple of kids (who nowadays would be LARPers) who didn't want the houses built in their stretch of woodlands. Unless it was the whole "listen to the coyotes yell" thing, but I doubt they were tickling coyotes...

I bought this episode on VHS a few months back. It's a good episode; highly recommended.

TheCars1986, Cold Case Files was a show about a cases that had went cold and were then solved by new leads or breaks in technology. You could basically call the show Solved Mysteries, as that's what it deals with exclusively. It's kind of a celebration of relentless police work and forensic science. As far as crime shows go, I think it was second only to Unsolved Mysteries. In this case, the show gives credit to Unsolved Mysteries for leading to the arrest.

EPISODE SPOILERS:
The Cold Case Files episode shows additional tapes of the arsonist at home. He dresses up as a vampire and other monsters and does Satanic routines for videos, where he boasts of killing people and even murders a dummy-dad he's rigged up. He and some buddies stage a violent war movie in the park where he shot the video of the house burning.

Police did find mutilated cats in his basement.

When Cold Case Files ran this segment, they noted that after being captured, authorities found out that the two boys responsible for this had also tortured and killed animals.

I thought it was amazing that police weren't able to solve this case sooner, especially since someone from the Redwood fire department actually filmed the house fire as part of a training film.

Thanks for the tip. I've read that the CCF of this case is very interesting. It supposedly shows other home videos made by the arsonist with him in a mask and performing acts of Satinism. I've tried looking for the video online, but was unable to. This will be my chance to finally see it for myself.

Your not missing much. Its blurs out the faces and is really only about 30 seconds total.

I wonder if a classmates.com search could turn up their identities. At least Omar's, we know his age and city, and Omar isnt all that common of a name....

What I find unbelievable is that no one has ever publicly identified either Omar or his freaky little friend. That tape received a lot of publicity, and has been featured on numerous reality shows. So who are they? I think it's time for someone from Redwood City to spill the beans.

I agree. I don't understand why it was all kept anonymous in the first place!

Were they minors at the time the crime was committed? That would be one reason why their identites were revealed. I guess if you did something really reprehensible as a teenager, as an adult, you wouldn't want that information bantered about.

I think they were but even so, look at all those 48 Hours Mysteries with minors involved as the killer or facilitator and their identities aren't withheld. Now that I think about it, I wonder if one or both of these minors involved in the arson case committed suicide and the families do not want their identities revealed.

Holy cow...I'm watching this episode of CCF right now...the videos this kid made are really disturbing! Glad the kids got some treatment, but I doubt it helped.

Here's what I saw... two bored (and possibly neglected) kids acting out to have some fun. (playing Army in the woods?) the only disturbing thing I saw was that one of the teens tortured animals and had set the fires. I thought all the Satanic/dressup was just something they did to feel important and to pass the time.

I was more disturbed that they were probably on the road to becoming serial killers. the Satan stuff? came across as ridiculous to me. but that's just my 2 cents.

I see what you mean. I was goth all through high school and I did dumb stuff too. But I didn't torture and kill animals and burn things. I think coupled with that, the videos are scarier.

Still an UM as to why the names were never released. still shocked they didn't get hardcore jail time but mental help? those kids caused alot of mayhem and damage! I guess we'll never know.

Pretty sure one of them was a minor during all this, which is a good reason not to release names...

What was the name of Omar's neighbor who was interviewed on Cold Case Files?

The episode of Cold Case Files that featured that story is called Reconstructing Murder/Fire Flicks, with Fire Flicks being the second story and is about the 18 year old arsonist, who's name was never given. The boy acted alone in the fires.
